Movie Discussion – Hellboy II: The Golden Army

It topped the box office this weekend, but none of the staff got out to see it. So do our dirty work for us and tell everyone what you thought of del Toro’s latest flick.

  1. Hellboy 2
I liked the first one quite a lot. I liked this one quite a lot more than that. One of the rare situations that the sequel is better than the original. In my opinion.

I’d have to agree with Tekzel. Better than the first. Lots more action! Lots more fun! And still a decent story (and one could argue that it’s sorta moralistic in how we deal with the environment). And they brought in Johann! Maybe, for the next one they could bring in Roger. If they do a next one.

This was certainly prettier, smoother, and more concise, but I think the story in the first one worked better.

The jarring plot holes from the first one (how did they clear the monsters from the sewers?) made it hard for me to enjoy it.

I think this one was better than the first too. However I have gotten really bored with wire-fu action scenes and there are LOTS of them in this film. So that part I was disappointed by. But it was an enjoyable flick that I skipped out early for from work to see and was worth it.

The first film had a better flow, though it was an origin story. I will agree the action was better, though the character development seemed a little lite.

  3. Better Editing == del Toro look
I wonder the first studio had a bigger hand id editing the first movie. This one looked like a del Toro movie where the first one looked like a big studio production of a comic book movie.

Maybe it’s the age of the first, but this one looked a lot more like "Pan’s Labyrinth" than the first. And, to me, "Pan’s" is del Toro’s finest work.
