Here’s this week’s list. Still to come: a review of “Smallville” (next) followed by one of the several overdue “Secret Invasion” reviews.
First, the DVD releases:
- The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (50th Anniversary Edition)
- 30 Rock: Season Two
- Alice Faye Collection 2: Includes “Rose of Washington Square,” “Hollywood Cavalcade,” “The Great American Broadcast,” “Hello, Frisco, Hello” and “Four Jills In A Jeep.”
- Allo ‘Allo: Complete Series Nine
- Allo ‘Allo: The Complete Collection
- Beverly Hillbillies: The Official Second Season
- Brotherhood: The Complete Second Season
- Buso Renkin, Vol. 2

- The Doulos – Criterion Collection
- Elemental Gelade: Box Set
- Ergo Proxy: Box Set
- Four Minutes
- Ghost Hunt, Season 1, Part 1
- Halloween: Three Disc Unrated Collector’s Edition: There seems to be a more elaborate collection coming next week. It may be worth holding off until the differences are clear.
- The Happening
- Holiday in Handcuffs: Mario Lopez is handcuffed to Melissa Joan Hart, and somehow, this is a problem for him.
- How I Met Your Mother – Season Three
- Indy Fans and the Quest For Fortune and Glory
- Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead
- Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Season One
- Kill Switch
- The Last of the Mohicans – Special Edition: The 1936 version of the film.
- Lexx: Season One: Based on the title, disk count and running length, I’m guessing this is the original four part miniseries, with Eva Habermann as the Zev Bellringer (as opposed to the later transformation into Xenia Seeberg as Xev Bellringer.) I should probably get around to reviewing this one.
- The Man In The Iron Mask – Special Edition: The 1939 version of the film.
- Martin: The Complete Fifth Season
- Mission Impossible: The Complete Fifth Season
- Mister Roberts: This is a remake, starring Kevin Bacon, Charles Durning, Robert Hays, Marilu Henner and Howard Hesseman.
- The Munsters: The Complete Series
- The Munsters: Family Portrait
- Mutant X: The Complete Collection: According to this TVShowsOnDVD.com report, this release has actually been cancelled. That’s an extremely reliable site, so I’m listing this only to inform those who’ve already ordered the package about why they won’t be getting it.
- My Hime: Anime Legends Complete Collection
- My Otome Zwei: Limited Edition
- My-Zhime: My-Otome
- Normal
- The Original Faces of Death: 30th Anniversary Edition: The DVD has one user review right now, which is 5 stars. The Blu-Ray also has one user review, which is 1 star.
- The Picture of Dorian Gray
- Planet of the Beast King: The Complete Series
- Psycho: We reviewed this one back here.
- Ray Harryhausen Gift Set: Includes “20 Million Miles to Earth,” “It Came From Beneath The Sea,” “Earth vs. the Flying Saucers” and a statue of Ymir. It does not includes “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad.” That’s available individually.
- Rear Window: We reviewed this gem back in 2005.
- Robot Chicken: Season Three
- The Santa Clause: 3 Movie Collection
- The Sarah Jane Adventures – The Complete First Season
- The Simpsons – The Complete Eleventh Season: The non-head packaging.
- The Simpsons – The Complete Eleventh Season: Krusty Head packaging
- Sleeping Beauty: Two Disc Platinum Edition: Note that the Blu-Ray edition also includes a DVD edition, so if you ever plan to upgrade, that’s an option well worth considering.
- The Smurfs: Season One, Vol. Two
- South Park: The Cult of Cartman – Revelations
- Speed Racer: The Complete Classic Series Collection: The packaging here is similar to the Star Trek animated series.
- Speed Racer: The Next Generation – The Fast Track
- Suzuka Box Set
- The Three Stooges Collection, Vol. 4: 1943-1945
- Touch of Evil (50th Anniversary Edition): The Orson Welles classic. Well, the other Orson Welles classic.

- You Don’t Mess With The Zohan: Single disc unrated edition.

Now, the Blu-Ray releases:
- The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (50th Anniversary Edition)
- Amityville Horror
- Beetlejuice (20th Anniversary Edition)
- Body Heat
- Carrie
- Erin Brokovich
- The Happening
- Interview With The Vampire
- The Omen
- The Omen Collection
- The Original Faces of Death: 30th Anniversary Edition
- Ray Harryhausen Collection: Includes “20 Million Miles To Earth,” “Earth vs. the Flying Saucers,” “It Came From Beneath The Sea” and “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad.”
- Sleeping Beauty: This includes two Blu-Ray disks with the same content as the DVD edition, as well as a third disk with a DVD copy of the movie itself, so you can watch it on DVD now and have Blu-Ray access after a hardware upgrade later.
- The Visitor
- You Don’t Mess With The Zohan: Unrated Edition
- Young Frankenstein
Finally, the pick of the week. There’s a nice selection of library titles this week, but the selection of new titles coming out in the next two weeks is excellent. My advice this week is to hold out for a week or two and check out those options before figuring out what you’ll get with this month’s budget.
Faces of Death
I saw this on video back in the early ’90s. It shows a lot of death, both for animals and humans. There’s footage of an actual beheading as well as an electric chair execution. One that really stuck with me was when some diners ordered monkey brains–then they find out they have to first kill the monkey by bludgeoning it to death with a hammer (the experience took away their appetites). And at the end of the movie there is a cult that eats a fresh human cadaver. That part was too gross for me. All in all, however, I enjoyed watching it.
Re: Faces of Death
That is the only thing I remember clearly about that movie. My friends all wanted to watch it because it had supposedly been banned in <x> number of states, and I don’t recall much anything else (maybe a guy falling from a building?) besides the monkey brains scene.
I’m in no particular hurry to watch that movie again.
Touch of Evil…Brilliant!
If there are any aspiring filmmakers out there, I highly recommend Touch of Evil. The first fifteen minutes alone should be required viewing for all film students.
Grab a copy and turn out the lights!
My pick…
I’m going to go for the Trial of a Time Lord boxed set, if only because I’ve been waiting a while for this to come out stateside, and I’ve really been looking forward to this Doctor Who season.
