Weekly Digital Disc Picks – October 7, 2008

Here’s this week’s list. Still to come: a review of “Smallville” (next) followed by one of the several overdue “Secret Invasion” reviews.

First, the DVD releases:

Now, the Blu-Ray releases:

Finally, the pick of the week. There’s a nice selection of library titles this week, but the selection of new titles coming out in the next two weeks is excellent. My advice this week is to hold out for a week or two and check out those options before figuring out what you’ll get with this month’s budget.

  1. Faces of Death
I saw this on video back in the early ’90s. It shows a lot of death, both for animals and humans. There’s footage of an actual beheading as well as an electric chair execution. One that really stuck with me was when some diners ordered monkey brains–then they find out they have to first kill the monkey by bludgeoning it to death with a hammer (the experience took away their appetites). And at the end of the movie there is a cult that eats a fresh human cadaver. That part was too gross for me. All in all, however, I enjoyed watching it.

That is the only thing I remember clearly about that movie. My friends all wanted to watch it because it had supposedly been banned in <x> number of states, and I don’t recall much anything else (maybe a guy falling from a building?) besides the monkey brains scene.

I’m in no particular hurry to watch that movie again.

  2. Touch of Evil…Brilliant!
If there are any aspiring filmmakers out there, I highly recommend Touch of Evil. The first fifteen minutes alone should be required viewing for all film students.

Grab a copy and turn out the lights!

  3. My pick…
I’m going to go for the Trial of a Time Lord boxed set, if only because I’ve been waiting a while for this to come out stateside, and I’ve really been looking forward to this Doctor Who season.
