The Fiz is on vacation, so here’s your list for this week.
First, the DVD releases:
- That 70’s Show: Complete Giftset
- Adventures of Robin Hood: The Complete Second Season
- Alfred Hitchcock Premiere Collection: Includes “Lifeboat,” “Spellbound,” “Notorious,” “The Paradine Case,” “Sabotage,” “Young and Innocent,” “Rebecca” and “The Lodger.” I find this set a bit frustrating: I’ve been looking for “Paradine Case” for years, and now that it’s finally back in print, it’s only out in an $84 dollar box set filled with seven other movies I already own. I can’t quite justify getting the upgraded copies of “Young and Innocent” and “The Lodger” along with that for the total price. If I didn’t already have the others, I’d grab it without hesitation.
- Alien – Predator Total Destruction Collection: Includes the Alien Quadrilogy, the Predator movies, and the AVP movies.
- America: Stories of War 36 DVD Collection: I’m not listing all 50 movies here, but if you follow the link, you’ll find a user comment that does so.
- Arch of Triumph
- Azumanga Daioh, Vol. 2: Complete Collection
- Back To You – Season One
- Bleach Movie 1: Memories of Nobody
- Capricorn One: From the days when the general public liked O.J.
- Chaplin (15th Anniversary Edition): The Robert Downey Jr. movie
- Classic Westerns 3-Film Collection: Includes “The Way West,” “The Bravados” and “Broken Arrow.”
- Claymore, Starter Set (includes Vol. 1)
- CSI: Crime Scene Investigations – The Eighth Season
- Degrassi: The Next Generation Ultimate Fan Set
- The Deputy
- Drive-In Cult Classics 3: Includes “The Babysitter,” “Weekend with the Babysitter,” “The Pink Angels,” “Blood Mania,” “Single Room Furnished,” “The Pom Pom Girls,” “Malibu Beach” and “Van Nuys Blvd.”
- Ghost House Underground Eight Film Collection
- Ghost In The Shell: Season One
- Giant 600 Cartoons: Special Collectors Edition
- Halloween: 30th Anniversary Box Set
- Holiday Inn
- Home Alone: The Complete Collection
- Icons of Horror: Hammer Films: Includes “The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb,” “The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll,” “Scream of Fear” and “The Gorgon.”
- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Single Disc Edition)
- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Two Disc Special Edition)
- Indiana Jones – The Complete Adventures Collection: Includes all four feature films.
- Itazura Na Kiss 5
- Kanon, Vol. 6
- Karin, Vol. 5 – Ascendance
- Killing of a Chinese Bookie – Criterion Collection
- Lady Chatterley (Extended European Edition): Released by Kino international, which does this type of thing very well.
- Legendary Westerns 3-Film Collection: Includes “Support Your Local Sheriff,” “Support Your Local Gunfighter” and “Hombre.” I’m not a western fan at all, but I enjoyed both of the “Support Your Local …” movies.
- Liberty’s Kids: Complete Series
- Lil’ Bush: Resident of United States – Season Two
- Long Way Down
- Naruto Uncut Box Set: Volume 10
- Nash Bridges – The First Season
- Negima: Spring and Summer OVA
- The New World
- Notorious: One of three great Hitchcock films out this week, originally released through the Criterion Collection.
- Nuku Nuku The Whole Kitten-Kaboodle Collection
- The Partridge Family: The Complete Third Season
- Payback: Not the Mel Gibson movie
- Rebecca: One of three great Hitchcock films out this week, originally released through the Criterion Collection.
- The Rocky Horror Tribute Show
- Rules of Engagement: The Complete Second Season
- The Sarah Silverman Program: Season Two, Vol. One
- School Rumble: Season 2, Part 1
- Scott Baio is 45 and Single: Season One
- Scott Baio is 46 and Pregnant: Season Two
- Shogun Assassi: 5 Film Collector’s Set
- Shonen Onmyouji, Vol. 1
- Shonen Onmyouji, Vol. 2
- Shonen Onmyouji, Vol. 3
- Shonen Onmyouji, Starter Set (includes Vol. 1)
- Short Cuts – Criterion Collection
- SilverHawks, Vol. 1
- Slayers Revolution, Vol. 1
- Spellbound: One of three great Hitchcock films out this week, originally released through the Criterion Collection.
- SpongeBob SquarePants – Who Bob What Pants?
- Stuck
- Sweet Sixteen – Director’s Cut: Not even remotely like “Sixteen Candles.”
- Ultraman: The Complete Series
- The Unit – The Complete Third Season
- The Universe – The Complete Season Two
- War, Inc.
- Zombie Jamboree: 25th Anniversary Convention for “Night of the Living Dead”: We’ll finally review “Night of the Living Dead” this Halloween.
Now, the Blu-Ray releases:
- American Gangster
- Casino
- Constantine
- Eastern Promises
- The Gangster Gift Set: Includes “American Gangster,” “Casino” and “Eastern Promises.”
- Great Expectations
- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
- Jewel of the Nile
- Poltergeist
- Romancing The Stone
- Stuck
- The Ultimate Matrix Collection
- War Inc.
Finally, the pick of the week. If you missed the Criterion release, get this week’s MGM release of Notorious, either as a single release or in the box set. It’s a great Hitchcock film, and one of his most influential movies. Highly, highly recommended.
Anime Picks
As far as Anime goes this month, the releases this month look rather dry… except for disk one of "Slayers Revolution" – the new "The Slayers" TV series. That’s my pick for the week.
Either that, or if you don’t have Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex or Azumanga Daioh, get the bricks (Season or partial-season collections) of those.
Re: Anime Picks
Everyone already has those. Heck, even I have both seasons of GitS, and Azumanga Daioh, and I’m not that much of an anime person.
Dark Knight release date
A couple of weeks back, I theorized that "Dark Knight" wouldn’t make it out by Christmas because of the January rerelease. I was wrong; it’s coming out December 9 in single DVD, double DVD, and Blu-Ray editions. Currently, it takes up spots 1 (Blu-Ray), 2 (double DVD) and 6 (single DVD) on Amazon.com’s bestseller list.
Re: Dark Knight release date
That’ll teach me not to preview when I’m back in town: single DVD, double DVD, and Blu-Ray editions.
Ultraman Complete Series
I have fond memories of Ultraman from when I was young, so I decided to get the DVDs from the library and watch the series all over again (this week’s release isn’t the first one). Oh, it was horrible. I didn’t even make it all the way through before giving up. Guess I had to be 6 years old to appreciate it.

Slayer AWOL
The Slayers DVD seems to have been a mistaken listing – it has been pulled from amazon and apparently was only two episodes anyway. Maybe next year they’ll put the first 13 episode set together for the US market?
