Fringe Discussion: “The Equation”

Here’s the real Pattern: Every case in the Fringe-iverse links to our favourite mad scientist’s past research…. Or, apparently, his past associates in the mental institution. In this case, an abduction leads him back to his old stomping grounds.

Father-son chemistry still works well here; Torv-everyone chemistry does not. As a bonus, this episode also features Walter-Walter chemistry

How did it work for you, overall?

  1. Fire Torv, keep everybody else
Subject says it all. Get rid of her and have Joshua Jackson be the FBI/Homeland Security guy. The best part of the show was the showdown between Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Dr. Sumner (William Sadler) over Walter (John Noble) in the hallway of the mental hospital. I think that was a true glimpse of what the show could be.

Yes indeed. Torv fails to impress on just about every level. She’s not even all that great for eye candy. She’s OK, but she’s no Gillian Anderson, Summer Glau, Jewel Staite, Sarah Michelle Gellar, or Eliza Dushku (I could go on, but you get my drift…)

It would really be a shame (not) if she were to die in some sort of pattern-related mishap, or at least move to the dark side and disappear into the large corporation which I can’t remember the name of, but was also linked to many of the pattern events.

They have seemed to move things slightly away from always involving Walter’s research a bit. They also haven’t mentioned that company or his rival much in the last few episodes (Certainly not as much as in the initial episodes)

It seems like they are making some slight adjustments, but not enough yet to make a big difference.

Aside from Walter and Peter, I’m starting to lose interest.

I find Torv very attractive, but she has no chemistry with the rest of the cast. Sure she is suppose to a hard as nails G-woman, but that doesn’t stop shows like Bones from working. I can’t decide if it’s her or what she has been given to work with in script, and direction. Anyone seen her in anything else? Then again maybe we were hoping too much for Scully in a blond wig…. I say kill her off and give us more Asterisk, Asteroid, something with an A….

Every time I saw Torv she seems to me that she is in some sort of clinch, too concentrated to her speaking. I’m not a native English speaker (which you can guess from my writing ;) ), so I can’t tell does she nail the American accent right; but the producers should either let her to act for a change, or to find a replacement.

BTW, she looks perfect for the role, IMHO – not too pretty, but tough enough; too bad that something wasn’t clicked right.

Yes, but a native English speaker never would have given us such a brilliant, amusing phrasing as "something wasn’t clicked right." Thank you. That made my morning. (And no, I’m not being sarcastic).

Walter and Peter are the strong points for me as well. I really, really enjoy Walter. It’s becoming his show. I’ve enjoyed the stories. The only element that seems flat is Torv, but I’m still watching this show faithfully.

This episode had one of the more intriguing stories, with everything just plausible enough to keep me interested.

        I’m still not going anywhere.

  2. Not watching
I just find myself DVRing the show, not watching it, coming to the discussion here, finding no reason to watch it.

    I think I’m done with this show….

Actually, I think the show is getting better. – don’t get me wrong… the female lead is a real weakness, but other than that, it is actually kinds neat to see. – Call it a guilty pleasure if you will, but I am usually quite entertained by this show.

And not mentioned (yet) in the discussion of this episode was a really nice presentation to the inter-relationship between music and math. that’s not something that comes up in any other show that I can think of.

Of course, _I_’m one to talk… I was one of the first to bail on LOST, and HEROES… but still… Something about Fringe keeps me coming back.
