Matt Smith IS The Doctor

The BBC has announced that actor Matt Smith, age 26 will be the next actor to take on the role of The Doctor, after David Tennant regenerates.

The final of the four special episodes of Doctor Who with Tennant as The Doctor will run in early 2010 – presumably the regeneration will be in that episode, putting Tennant’s run as The Doctor (2005-2010) at approximately 4 years, on par with John Pertwee’s run (1970-1974).

  1. The emo of this one goes up to Eleven
He looks even more Emo than Ten does, but I’m thinking he has potential. I saw him act in a single episode of Secret Diary, opposite Billie Piper, and thought he was pretty decent.

I’ll trust the producers on this choice, and I look forward to seeing him.

I look forward to seeing him too.

He might bring back some of the wildness that Eccleston brought with this "new" version. ;) I really did enjoy Eccleston. Sadly, though, Tennant was just starting to grow on me.. the whole first season with Tennant, I thought was a waste, but he has improved since then, imo.

Gotta wait a whole year, though, to see Smith in action! :(

  2. Here be spoilers
Thanks for the spoilerific headline (not that I’ve actually heard of Matt Smith, but still).

Not anymore spoileriffic than Slashdot’s headline (Actor Matt Smith Will Be 11th Doctor Who} or the BBC’s own headline (New Doctor actor is youngest ever). Nor is it more spoileriffic than the BBC’s own article.

True dat, I hadn’t seen any of the other sites headlines yet.

  3. Doctor 90210
Instead of a sonic screwdriver he uses the Guitar Hero guitar.
And thinks he’s bad, even though he can’t really play the guitar

      Whoville?

The current generation of fans are used to a younger-looking Doctor though.

I was hoping for an older Doctor…. I also had thought they were leaning towards a non-white male in a shocking show of nonconformity.

Oh well, I’ll just keep in mind that Moffat is running the show, so no matter who the Doctor, the writing will be much better.

Moffat said, on the announcement special, that he was originally looking for an older Doctor, but that the actor had to capture the youthful energy that the Doctor has. He was adamant about an older Doctor, until Matt Smith came in and acted his butt off. Given that, I’m assuming that Matt did the opposite, and was young, but gave a performance that captured the aged intellect of the Doctor.

After seeing his work, I trust Moffat to make this call, so we’ll see how it works out.
