It’s Alive! It’s Alive!

Umm… Well, not quite!

Scientists at the Scripps Research Institute have created self-replicating RNA enzymes, which doesn’t quite amount to Frankenstein’s Monster or the Final Cylon, but takes us a step in that general direction.

“It kind of blew me away,” said team member Tracey Lincoln of the Scripps Research Institute, who is working on her Ph.D. “What we have is non-living, but we’ve been able to show that it has some life-like properties, and that was extremely interesting.”

  1. Sci-fi reference…
    wouldn’t
    "Space, Above and Beyond"
be a much better reference here?

You remember that one, right? That’s the one where there was a backlash against the people who were grown in tanks by the general population. So somebody (either Government, or Mega-corp; the show didn’t last long enough to find out) instigated an alien race to declare war on us (and then claimed we were the innocent victims) to get us to all rally together. – After, that is, the same idea with terrestrial AI’s didn’t last long enough to get that desired affect.

With the exception of using First Generation Battlestar Galactica space-fighter physics, it wasn’t a half-bad show.

I still think a few more people know Frankenstein, but Above and Beyond always looked interesting.
