Weekly Comics Discussion – January 28, 2009

Posted a day early to open with a comment that you may need to plan around. The full list is here.

Before I get into this week’s picks, I want to stress one thing: the most important reason to head to your local comic shop this week is to make sure you’ll get a copy of the Incognitio #1 reprint due out next week if you missed it the first time. I’ll review it before the reprint hits next week (with issue #2 due the week after), but it’s easily the most involving comic book I’ve read in over a year. I was originally disappointed that Criminal was going to take a temporary back burner to make room for this series, given how much I enjoy the comic noir of Criminal (which I’d have reviewed long ago, had it qualified for the sci-fi and fantasy focus we’ve got around here.) After reading Incognito, though, I wouldn’t be terribly upset if Criminal stopped entirely to make room for this series. Buy the issues or wait for the trade, but get it in some form, and know that the monthly issues have “bonus features” that aren’t collected in trades (as does Criminal.) The cover to the second printing will look like this, and in the unlikely event that you can still find one, the cover to the first printing looks like this. Written by Ed Brubaker with art by Sean Phillips.

Dark Horse Comics

  • STAR WARS LEGACY #32 FIGHT ANOTHER DAY PART 1 OF 2
  • STAR WARS VECTOR TP VOL 01 CHAPTERS 1 & 2
  • UMBRELLA ACADEMY DALLAS #3 (OF 6)
  • USAGI YOJIMBO #117

DC Comics

  • BATMAN #685 – Faces of Evil
  • BLUE BEETLE #35 – The second last issue, and not a part of the final solicited trade. (Nor are issues 27 and 28 for that matter. Those of us following in TPB form
  • FACES OF EVIL KOBRA #1
  • FINAL CRISIS #7 (OF 7) – This week’s highest profile review. I hope this starts making sense soon. The preview reveals that Final Crisis: Superman Beyond might be required reading to understand even the first page of this issue.
  • FINAL CRISIS REVELATIONS #5 (OF 5) – This series will also get reviewed this week, but probably not until the weekend.
  • JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #23 – Faces of Evil
  • REIGN IN HELL #7 (OF 8)
  • SUPERMAN #684 – Faces of Evil
  • TEEN TITANS #67 – Faces of Evil
  • TRINITY #35 – I haven’t decided if I’m reviewing this in 13 issue chunks as the TPB collections come out or if I’m reviewing it as a complete 52 issue series. Any preferences?
  • WONDER WOMAN #28 – Faces of Evil

Image Comics

  • ASTOUNDING WOLF-MAN #12
  • SAVAGE DRAGON #144

Marvel Comics

  • AMAZING SPIDER-MAN EXTRA #2
  • AVENGERS INITIATIVE #21 – Dark Reign
  • CAPTAIN AMERICA #46
  • CRIMINAL TP VOL 04 BAD NIGHT (MR)
  • DAREDEVIL #115
  • DARK TOWER TREACHERY #5 (OF 6)
  • FANTASTIC FOUR #563
  • GHOST RIDER DANNY KETCH #4 (OF 5)
  • MARVELS EYE OF CAMERA #3 (OF 6)
  • MS MARVEL #35 – Dark Reign. Carol Danvers’ story ends with issue 37, but the series continues after that.
  • NEW AVENGERS #49 – Dark Reign. Leading into the issue 50 return of Stephen Strange.
  • NOVA #21
  • RUNAWAYS 3 – Terry Moore is done with issue 9. No word on his replacement.
  • ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #130
  • X-FORCE #11
  • YOUNG X-MEN #10

Okay, but I don’t see it in the release list. Am I missing something?

Reprint is scheduled for next week, but it’s an adult only title, so you may need to talk to your LCS about getting your copy set aside in advance.

  1. Bonus features in the issues

…know that the monthly issues have "bonus features" that aren’t collected in trades…

Interesting. Usually the bonus features in the trades are there to get people to (re)buy them that way. I guess trades are becoming sufficiently popular that some of the companies want to keep people buying the individual issues!

I can understand that. Gives them more immediate feedback on what’s selling, and allows them to build hype and suspense in a more controlled way; it also makes it a lot easier to do line-wide events, which they like. Of course, the trades do tend to be a somewhat different audience; I’m sure there are a number of titles that sell as well or better in trades than in issues.

  2. Incognito Revisited
Okay, I got Incognito #1, and it was definitely interesting enough to buy more. Is the main character’s backstory from another comic, or is he totally new? Also, do you know if this is a mini-series or a regular series?

This is his first appearance, and the start of a new universe. It sounds like it’s a similar structure to Criminal in that it’s solicited as a miniseries, but each "miniseries" is more like a story arc, each starting only 2-3 months after the previous one.
