Latest Hidden Messages in Bandai Entertainment’s HTML.

Bandai Entertainment, the company which (among other series they’ve licensed) released all of the various Mobile Suit Gundam series stateside, likes to put hidden messages in the HTML code of their web page to tease future releases. I’m bringing this up because AnimeVice.com has the latest messages.

Analysis of my own below the cut

As far as the analysis goes… I’m going to say, based on the line “Listen to my Final Songs” that it’s going to be a Macross series, possibly Macross Frontier as that’s the latest series, although that doesn’t rule out Macross 7 either (protagonist Nikki Basra’s “battle cry” was “Listen to my song!”) I’m not holding my breath though, because the North American rights for Macross have been a convoluted bloody mess over whether the NA rights for one thing or another were held by Studio Nue (the creators of the show) or Hamony Gold. (We were lucky to get Macross Plus, much less the original SDF Macross). I can’t think of anything else off the top of my head. Well, maybe Legend of the Galactic Heroes, but that doesn’t fit in with the musical theme…

If you’ve got any better ideas, let us know with a comment.

  1. maybe
Maybe the new trend is to just go ahead and make the damn movie; pay a fine when you get sued.
It beats not making the movie at all :)

    Maybe that’s just wishful thinking.
But the makers of Spider-man got sued over rights, and still pulled in some frakk-you money. Maybe when Watchmen makes a gazillion dollars they’ll go ahead with their projects, rights mess or no.

Well, it’s more, in this case, translating (and recording a dub for) 48 episodes of series. Really, the rights to Macross are actually split between 3 companies, not 2. First, there’s a dispute over the rights to Macross in Japan over Big West Productions, Studio Nue, and Tatsunoko (producers of Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets and lots of other stuff) – the rights for which, even after several lawsuits are still remarkably confusing (Big West holds rights to the original show and character and mecha designs, but the rights for derivative works, such as the Macross: Do You Remember Love film, Macross II, and Macross Plus (as well as Macross 7) are still up in the air and could still be held by Studio Nue… or they could be held by Tatsunoko, who also holds partial copyrights.

Then there’s the US licensing. Harmony Gold is the exclusive US licensor for Macross – if you want anything Macross, you have to go through them first. This ups the expense significantly, because instead of just having to pay the Japanese production company with the rights to the relevant series (and as Macross 7 is a derivative work – that situation is now muddled), you’ve got to give Harmony Gold their cut too.

And, of course, it could be an entirely different show altogether – it could be Nodime Cantible (which is a show based around music, but isn’t genre). But, to add to the Macross confusion, Bandai Visual is listed as a producer for Macross 7, which makes things even more interesting there.
