This is a pretty sparse week in a lot of respects.
First, AceCaseOR’s picks:
- Akira: This is on Blu-Ray. (Fiziko would have picked this too.)
- Death Note Vol. 9, available with or without a collectable figurine. The show is getting near the end. No pun intended. (Fiziko would have picked this too.)
- Dojin Works Volume 1: This is the Kitch release, which is bundled with a manga, that apparently got delayed for some reason.
- E’s Otherwise Complete: Series about a psychic who is sent to rescue other psychics from humans who would try to destroy them.
- King of Bandit Jing: Complete Collection
- Kurau: Phantom Memory: Complete Boxed Set
- Love Hina Complete Series Boxed Set: This is a re-release of the semi-classic harem anime.
- Maria Watches Over Us – Season 3: This is a slice-of-life girls anime (or shōjo anime) based around an all-girls high school.
- Protege: Hong Kong Blood Opera (ala “A Better Tommorow” and “A Bullet In The Head”) released under the Dragon Dynasty label.
- Saint Seiya: Collection 2
- Samurai Seven Boxed Set: This Blu-Ray collecton is the series brick of the officially licensed science fiction anime adaptation of The Seven Samurai.
- Save Me! Lollipop: The Complete Series: Reverse Harem (lots of men throwing themselves at one girl) Shonen anime.
- Shattered Princess: Complete Series Boxed Set: Another reverse harem shonen anime.
- Shonen Onmyouji: Volume 6
- Sister Princess: Complete Collection: Harem anime with… slightly incestuous overtones. I have no intentions of watching this. It’s listed twice for some reason.
- The Wonders Are Many: The Making of “Doctor Atomic”: This is the making-of documentary for the opera about the construction of the atomic bomb. I managed to catch most of a performance of this on “Great Performances” and I enjoyed it a lot.
Then, Fiziko’s DVD picks:
- Breaking Bad – Season One
- Cyclops
- Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder
- Futurama Movie Collection: All four direct to home video movies.
- Girlfriends: The Sixth Season
- Ironweed
- Japan Noir: I’ve never seen any of these, but I’m a film noir buff, so I can’t ignore them in the listings.
- Just Shoot Me – Season Three
- The Last House on the Left
- The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice
- My Wife and Kids: Season One
- On The Other Hand, Death: So this is what Margot Kidder has been up to lately…
- Red Green Show – 2001 Season
- Sex Drive
- What Just Happened?
Now, Fiziko’s Blu-Ray releases:
- The Fog (1979)
- The French Connection
- The French Connection 2
- Friday the 13th, Part 2
- Friday the 13th, Part 3
- Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder
- Hounddog
- Ronin
- Sex Drive
- Vanishing Point
- What Just Happened?
- Zulu
Finally, the picks of the week. AceCaseOR says “Akira is my pick of the week. It is an excellent anime film, with positively stunning visuals. I’d say that it’s a movie everyone needs to see at least once. They don’t have to like it, they just need to watch it at least once.” Fiziko says, “the original French Connection edges out Akira, but only just.” Expect a few more Blu-Ray choices in the coming weeks, due to the kinds of new DVD releases we see this time of year.
Some advice…..
The Razzies can sometimes be a guide for video-buyers. The fridge-nuking Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull won for Worst Sequel, Prequel, or Spin-off, while Uwe Boll…. Well, you won’t be bowled over with surprise by his appearances.
Librarian
I really enjoyed the two previous DVDs in the Librarian series, and I’m looking forward to this new one.
