Watchmen Review Up At Hollywood Reporter

chad writes, The Hollywood Reporter has reviewed the Watchmen movie and calls it “the first real flop of 2009.” Warning: spoilers if you haven’t read the comic.

Our own review of Watchmen should be up this weekend, once we’ve (we being the Royal We, referring to a member of the staff) had a chance to see it (we don’t get invited to those swanky advanced screenings, unfortunately.)

Frankly, the Hollywood Reporter’s reviewer isn’t on my personal “Reviewers I Trust” list, my list is topped by (in no particular order) my fellow staff members here, and Shawn Levy and Mike Russell from the Portland Oregonian, among others. Anyway, apparently the public screenings of the movie have already started in Belgium, and the word of mouth I’ve gotten on some other forums from people there has been favorable, so, for the moment, take the Hollywood Reporter’s reporter’s review with a pinch of your seasoning of choice.

      Good movie; faithful adaptation; Could have used more giant squids.

  3. A Newbie Does Watchmen
    For the record, Rottentomatoes is at 65% positive on 200 or so reviews.

    I have never read the Watchmen comic and thought the movie was pretty good. Not a classic, not bad, just well worth watching. It is certainly a mixture of every dramatic angle possible with ramped up violence.

    But I’m glad I went.

      Timeshredder’s Journal. March 7, 2009. Returned from Watchmen. Often brilliant adaptation. Several serious missteps. Alan Moore has complained of disturbed fans met at conventions. Person with bad hygiene, admires Rorschach. Claims to be like Rorschach. Moore says he wants to back away from such a person, demanding they never approach him ever again.

      That person sat behind us in theater. Most distracting. Wanted to hit him with metal lunch tray.

      Tired. Review will be posted Saturday. I have business elsewhere, with better class of pillow.
