Marvel’s movie release schedule: 2010 to 2012

Marvel Studios confirmed today
that Sony Pictures Entertainment will release “Spider-Man 4” on May 6, 2011. Additionally, Marvel Studios has revised the release dates for “Thor” and “The First Avenger: Captain America” as part of its release strategy for an uninterrupted road to “The Avengers,” now debuting May 4, 2012.
Taking more time to make better movies is generally a good thing. I was concerned by how tightly packed the schedules were, particularly for “Thor.”

  1. Thor and Cap
Any word on the sort of tales Thor and Captain America are going to be? That is, are they re-tellings of the origin stories in Marvel (presumably with plenty of artistic license but keeping the same gist), or brand new origin stories? Or do they just jump in with the characters pre-existing as heroes (as all too few superhero stories do these days; they don’t all have to start with the origins)?

(Don’t get me wrong; I’ve very much enjoyed the origin stories of Spider-Man and (especially) Iron Man, among others. But they don’t all have to start there.)

I’m guessing they’ll go with the Ultimate Thor, whose origins remain a bit sketchy. That would work really well for the kind of non-origin film you mention.

Can anyone confirm that the Cap film will be set in the 1940s?

To date, discussions of "Thor" have only clearly said that Kenneth Brannagh has, apparently, an even better grasp of Thor’s history than John Favreau had of Iron Man’s history. There’s no mention of the story, the secret I.D., whether or not he’ll even have a secret identity, etc.

For "Captain America," Joe Quesada has said he’d prefer a World War II era story, which is consistent with the "First Avenger" tag on the announced title. To my knowledge, neither writer nor director is attached to that project, so I’d say nothing’s definite.
