I’m disappointed with LOTR missing the major
awards, as well as Memento‘s losses in
both the editing and screenplay categories.

You were disappointed, but surely you weren’t surprised! How could they give one of the major awards to a fantasy movie, when they could give it to an artsy movie about crazy people? I mean, come on!
I am really surprised about Memento not getting editing, though.
As Fiziko knows, though, I don’t really care much about the Oscars. Their biases are too strong. They’re comparing movies so wildly different I don’t see how they can decide that one movie is “the best”, or one actor is “the best” — which genre you like better will obviously come into play. And I don’t see why people put such a strong weight on what this “academy” has to say, anyway. I mean, sure, the people making the movies might care, since it’s supposed to be their “peers” giving the “awards”, but why do we care?!
(That last question wasn’t rhetorical, by the way. And yes, I go through this rant every year. ;)

Remember — LOTR gets two more chances at Oscars :)
Although they were all shot together, technically all three films are distinct, and there are performances we have yet to see. One of these years I suspect good Sir Ian will get a little golden statue for his mantle. As FOTR serves as an introduction for the really meaty parts of Tolkien’s story, who knows — maybe “Two Towers” or “Return of the King” will still snag best director/picture/actor/script/art direction/original song/supporting actor. :)

I would love to see the LOTR sequels become the first sequels in history to win Best Picture when the original did not. (Silence of the Lambs doesn’t count; Manhunter was a completely different production.) The only one that has a shot at best screenplay is probably the third, though, as it’s the only one that actually has a sense of closure. Too many voters need closure for the first two to win, I suspect.
