Weekly Comics Discussion – April 22, 2009

As usual, the complete list is available here.

Dark Horse Comics

  • STAR WARS DARK TIMES #13 BLUE HARVEST PT 1 (OF 5)
  • STAR WARS KNIGHTS OLD REPUBLIC #40 DUELING AMBITIONS PT 2

DC Comics

  • BATMAN BATTLE FOR THE COWL ARKHAM #1
  • BLUE BEETLE BOUNDARIES TP – This appears to be the final collection of the title, now cancelled.
  • DC LIBRARY BATMAN THE ANNUALS HC
  • DETECTIVE COMICS #853
  • JACK OF FABLES
  • JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #32
  • OUTSIDERS #17
  • SCALPED #28
  • SHOWCASE PRESENTS LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES TP VOL 03
  • TRINITY #47

Dynamite Entertainment

  • BATTLESTAR GALACTICA FINAL FIVE #1 (OF 4)

IDW Comics

  • ANGEL #20

Image Comics

  • INVINCIBLE #61
  • SAVAGE DRAGON #147
  • WITCHBLADE COMPENDIUM ED VOL 2 TP

Marvel Comics

  • AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #592
  • ASTONISHING X-MEN #29
  • AVENGERS INITIATIVE #23 – Dark Reign
  • DAREDEVIL #118 – Expect this to get renumbered to issue 500 in August, wrapping up Ed Brubaker’s run on the title. The current story, “Return of the King,” is definitely shaping up to be a Kingpin story we haven’t seen before.
  • DARK REIGN ELEKTRA #2 (OF 5)
  • FANTASTIC FORCE #1 (OF 5) – This was originally solicited as an ongoing, is now listed as 1 of 5, and the July solicits include issue “4 of 4.” I’m betting I’m not the only one who chose to pass on the series, based on that. It’s a sign of really crappy preorders.
  • GAMBIT CLASSIC TP VOL 01
  • GHOST RIDER #34 – At the end of this storyline, the main title shuts down for a miniseries, with a likely delay before a relaunch. Since Jason Aaron took over for Daniel Way, the writing has significantly improved. They’ve also recently changed artists, which really needed to happen.
  • GUARDIANS OF GALAXY #13 – A brief interlude before returning to the “War of Kings” tie-in issues.
  • HULK #11 – Defenders vs. Offenders. The series will be renumbered as issue 600 this July. That’s funny math; they count the original “Incredible Hulk #1-6” from the cancelled series, ignore the fact that he went from issue 6 to 60 when he moved to “Tales to Astonish” as a backup supporting Ant-Man(!), and then include the issues after that and the relaunched series until it was renamed “Incredible Hercules” after World War Hulk.
  • IMMORTAL IRON FIST #25
  • INCREDIBLE HERCULES #128 – Dark Reign
  • KICK ASS
  • MARVELS EYE OF CAMERA #5 (OF 6)
  • MIGHTY AVENGERS #24 – Dark Reign
  • NEW AVENGERS #52 – Dark Reign, and the search for the new Sorceror Supreme. I’m still betting on the Hood.
  • THOR #601 – This has been great.
  • WOLVERINE ORIGINS #35 – Dark Reign
  • X-FORCE #14 – Messiah War

  1. What, no mention of Detective Comics #853? This is the second part to the “Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?” story by Neil Gaiman.

    • Is that similar to the “Whatever Happened to the Man of Steel?” that marked the end of the first run of Superman?

          • I don’t think DC is even sure what they’re doing with Batman / Detective Comics. All I know is, Batman R.I.P. was a mess of a story line, and you would think that the company that precipitated the comic crash of the ’90s with the Death of Superman storyline would be a bit more careful about ‘killing off’ such a mainstream character.
