There are a couple of points of interest this week. The really big releases seem to be waiting for June. Also, Universal is rereleasing a few dozen titles not listed here with “Land of the Lost” movie cash included.
First, the DVD picks:
- 8 Simple Rules: Complete Second Season
- 24: Season Seven
- Chance Pop Session – Complete: Series about a trio of girls who are trying to become idol singers. Despite the appearances of the cover art, it’s not porn.
- Claymore – Volume 5
- Dragonball Z – Fusion Reborn/Wrath of the Dragon
- Dragonball Z – Season 9: The Majin Buu saga, and the season that brought us the Fuzion Dance.
- Driven To Kill
- Dr. Dolittle: Million Dollar Mutts: Alas, poor Judge Reinhold, how far ye have fallen…
- Fanboys: This won’t be the pick of the week because decisions on that are generally limited to stuff I’ve seen and can personally vouch for, but it’s definitely a “must see” title.
- Fist of the North Star – The Movie: This is the animated movie, instead of the live-action movie.
- Friday Night Lights: Complete Third Season
- The Guild – Season One
- The Guild – Season Two
- Gundam Seed Destiny Complete – Part 2
- Invasion Iowa: William Shatner pranks an entire town. Very tempting. Note that, at present, it’s considerably cheaper to pick up from Amazon.ca, before shipping. ($16.09 Can vs. $17.49 US)
- My Bloody Valentine
- My Bloody Valentine 3D
- My Bloody Valentine 3D/2D Flip
- Outlander
- Paul Blart – Mall Cop: Amazon’s advertising clip is a deleted scene. I hope they’re going for “DVD has footage not scene in theatres!” sales, because my gut instinct when I saw that was “filmmakers so utterly lost that the stuff they cut is better than what they kept.” Caveat: I haven’t seen the movie, as the trailers didn’t appeal to me in any way, shape or form.
- Pigs, Pimps and Prostitutes – 3 Films by Shohei Imamura – Criterion Collection
- Princess Resurrection – Collection 2
- Saiyuki: Requiem/Martian Successor Nadesico: Prince of Darkness: Double feature set.
- Schwarzenegger Collection: Includes “Red Heat,” “The Running Man,” “Total Recall,” and some rare gem called “Terminator 2.” Gee, I don’t know where else you’d find that one on DVD. It’s not like it’s been released before…
- Sister, Sister: Complete Season Two
- Terminator 2: Judgement Day: A “regular” two disc edition.
- True Blood: Complete First Season
- Valkyrie – Single Disc Edition
- Valkyrie – Two Disc Special Edition
- Wandering Ginza Butterfly: Yakuza semi-exploitation action film starring Meiko Kaji (Lady Snowblood)
- Wandering Ginza Butterfly 2: She-Cat Gambler: Sequel to the prior movie which ads Sonny Chiba (The Street Fighter, and a boatload of other Japanese martial arts films) to the mix.
- Wrestlemania 25
Now, the Blu-Ray picks:
- 3 Days of the Condor
- 24: Season Seven
- Batman: The first Tim Burton outing
- A Bug’s Life
- Changing Lanes
- Circle of Iron: Martial arts film based on a concept Bruce Lee was working on with James Coburn when Lee died. Starring Jeff Cooper (who went on to a few guest-starring roles before fading into obscurity) and co-starring Christopher Lee, David Carradine, and Eli Wallach.
- Dragonball Z – Fusion Reborn/Wrath of the Dragon
- Driven To Kill
- Dr. Dolittle: Million Dollar Mutts
- The Machinist
- My Bloody Valentine 3D
- Paul Blart: Mall Cop
- Paycheck
- Spy Game
- Terminator 2
- Terminator 2: Limited Endoskull Edition: That’s some nifty packaging, if you’ve got room for it.
- True Blood: Complete First Season
- Valkyrie
- Wrestlemania 25
Finally, the picks of the week. AceCaseOR says, “While the new Terminator 2 re-release has a lot of bonus features on there, I’m going with Spy Game – Redford and Pitt have some excellent chemistry here, and I might say that it’s got a mixture of Forsyth’s subject matter, but Stross’ Tongue-in-Cheek-ness (that would be Charles Stross, writer of The Atrocity Archive). It’s not a comedy, but there’s a few places where I just found myself smiling.” Fiziko says, “I’m going with A Bug’s Life, if only because I’m a little tired of the whole double/triple/octuple dip going on with Terminator 2.”
Regardless of whether or not I’ve seen it, the picture that has been circulating of Kristen Bell in the Leia bikini are making it my pick of the week :-)
It’s at the top of my Blockbuster Online queue, now I just need to watch something I’ve got and send it back in…
And by that I, of course, meant Fanboys. Somehow I managed to forget to type that part. My mind must have been elsewhere.
Expect a review of Fanboys soon.
The Guild is really good – those of you with Xbox Live can see it for free. For those of you that don’t know, it follows the ‘real life’ events in a group of MMO players and is hilarious.
Also, Felicia Day.
