Like the recent exploding, lens flaring version of Star Trek, the forthcoming big-budget Sherlock Holmes adaptation, action-packed and with non-Holmsian supernatural and sexy elements, will likely be “fun.” But….
….does every canonical hero have to be reworked in this manner? Can we sell anything anymore if it isn’t about explosions, non-stop action, and special effects? Does the Fate of the World always have to be at stake?
Anyway, the film, starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams, will be out next Christmas.
Watching it, I wondered if maybe they wouldn’t pull a “sure, it LOOKS supernatural, but as Scooby and the gang…er…I mean, Holmes and his cohort shall discover, it’s all a front to the REAL mystery!” type thing.
I concur. This seems like a “Holmes against irrational beliefs” more than “OMG VAMPIRES” story line.
I lol’d at the hammer joke. Hard. I wanna see this movie.
Anyone looked at the “district 9” trailer? Appears interesting.
This is, of course, the twist in a couple of the Doyle stories about Holmes (including Scooby-Doo’s most famous antecedent), and several pastiches do feature Holmes confronting the supernatural. And yeah, they have good actors.
I still wonder if it will feel like Holmes.
I don’t know, from the trailer it seemed pretty good to me. May be worth watching in the theater, instead of waiting for the DVD at the library. Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes makes a big difference.
Why do I get the feeling there will be an absence of cocaine in this movie?
Onscreen, perhaps.
I dunno about everyone else, but my reaction was “what the hell was that?”
I gotta agree. Just finished reading “”Hound of the Baskervilles, and this incarnation is soooo far off base. It looks like a spoof, without the charm of Gene Wilder’s “The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter Brother”.
