    • It’s part of a plan to offer digital comics that need to be digital because paper can’t do the job. The “Astonishing X-Men” run was probably chosen to be converted because Joss Whedon’s name will reach people who don’t already read comics, and because it’s the run that creates S.W.O.R.D., the agency Jessica Drew starts working for in the “Spider-Woman” motion comic. The Spider-Woman title was Brian Michael Bendis on scripts and Alex Maleev on art, and it’s Marvel’s first product to be designed specifically for motion comics. The print version will follow the motion comics by a few weeks, but it’ll have slightly different scenes, as there are some things the creative team found work better in motion, and others they found work better in print.

  1. Here’s my question: Why do they think they need to do this? It’s cool in a way, I guess, but I don’t need my comics animated. I just need them in digital format.

Right now, I could go hit a torrent and get pretty much every comic released in the past 6 months, and spend an evening reading them on my computer. And yes, I’m “stealing” them and getting them for free, but for me (and I suspect many others), it’s not really about getting them for free. It’s getting them in a format that is convenient and useful to me.

Marvel has a digital comics offering I know, but it’s mostly older stuff, it’s all on their site with a crappy reader, etc. That’s not what I want. What I want to be able to do is subscribe to a Marvel Comic, at or near regular subscription rates, and have them emailed to me in a CBR compatible format. I would pay for that, probably multiple titles. I know Marvel is probably scared to death at what this would lead to, as there wouldn’t be any copy protection and I could send the file to all my friends/offer it for upload to millions, but guess what? That’s going on already.

The music industry is showing the comics industry the way here with DRM-free digital music. It’s not killing them, people are still buying from iTunes/Amazon.
