What does the fall hold, other than Monday Night Football? I’ve got your scoop right here…
ABC: “Dinotopia” is pretty much it. Thursdays, against the seemingly-indestructible (and disturbingly long-lived) “Friends.” I wonder what they would’ve done if the miniseries had flopped, since they must
have had this in production for a while already.
CBS: You’re kidding, right?
FOX: “The X-Files,” of course, is gone, and Fox is planning to turn Sundays into a comedy-fest. “Dark Angel” gets the boot as well. The only genre shows on their new fall schedules are
Futurama (which is pretty much on borrowed time, Sundays at 7/6c) and Firefly (that’s not an official site, but it’s the best I could do),
from “Buffy” creator Joss Whedon. But it’s slated for the Friday Night Time Slot o’ Death (8/7c).
NBC: Right now, NBC executives are making sacrifices to their dark lords in thanks that they got to keep “Friends” around for another year. You think they’ve got time to put good SF on the schedule? Hell, they’re probably working on an all-Friends cable network even as we speak. (Seriously, pretty much nothin’ here.)
UPN:
There’s still a refuge for genre TV, even if it’s on a network I don’t get to watch. “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is still on Tuesdays, along with new series “Haunted,” starring Matthew Fox as a psychic private detective. And Wednesdays still have “Enterprise,” and another reincarnation of “The Twilight Zone,” hosted by Forest Whitaker
(from
Ghost Dog). (Ghost Dog isn’t genre, but it’s darn cool. Trust me on this.)
WB:
“Smallville” got picked up for another year. “Charmed” moves to Sundays, as does “Angel”, probably making a grab at all those misplaced viewers wondering what happened to “The X-Files.” (Or something.) I’m not sure whether to count “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” honestly.
What about Andromeda?
Anybody know when(if?) Andromeda’s next season starts? I know the season finale is this weekend, but the Andromeda website doesn’t say much that I could find about next season.

That site talks about the writing team for season 3. That’s a good sign. The show has been improving a lot. I’d like to see it continue.

How dare they moved “Charmed”! What am I going to do without my Alyssa fix on Thursday nights?! *drool* If they put it up against Six Feet Under on Sundays I’m going to cry. I don’t watch much TV but Thursday was my veg out night. Friends, Charmed (Will and Grace if Charmed was a repeat), and ER.

Or reality could set in and WB could cancel Angel and nobody could pick it up. Which is what it appears has happened. FOX and UPN both had shots at it and have reportedly showed no interest whatsoever. UPN passing probably knowing that Buffy won’t stay one more than one more season itself(just as well, awful as the show has gotten lately with the “Let’s write everyone off the show including all the male characters we can find” thing). With Dark Angel axed, Angel axed, and Buffy waiting for the axe, the trio that caused such a stir only a few years ago is already dead.
Lost in this though is the REAL travesty — UPN didn’t renew Special Unit 2, which was one of the funniest, most twisted and entertaining shows on TV. On Wed. nights we started watching Enterprise and then incidentally SU2 after it. Then it turned into SU2 and maybe watching Enterprise before it. It’s a shame, they had such a great cast…

I hate network TV…
With a short list of exceptions (Buffy, ER, and 3 or 4 others that I can’t think of right now) network TV is mostly crap. Also networks don’t have the wonderful habit of rerunning everything two hours later for Pacific viewers… something that comes in VERY handy when you use TiVo and two things on at the same time conflict. Damn them.
