With The X-Files off the air next season, I
won’t be doing the weekly reviews of that show. I do,
however, see six shows on the schedule that I will be
watching each week, but I’ll only have time to review
one on a regular basis. theangrymob’s already
reviewing Enterprise, so that takes one off
the list. The other five are described in more detail
below. So, read up, and post a comment telling me
which of these shows you want to see reviewed!
I’ll list the shows alphabetically, starting with:
Angel
This, in my opinion, has surpassed Buffy
this season. For those who don’t know, this fall it
starts its fourth season. It’s a Buffy
spinoff that covers the adventures of a vampire with
a soul and his friends fighting demons in Los
Angeles. It’ll move into the Sunday time slot that
The X-Files used to occupy, and it’s staying
on the WB network.
Birds Of Prey
The creators of Smallville have assembled a
new show about a different DC property. This one is
about a group of female superheroes fighting the good
fight in a post-Batman Gotham City. It’s got a
promising cast (IMDB
page) and great advance word from Ain’t
It Cool News. There’s already a decent looking
fanpage
up. It will air Wednesday nights on the WB. (I
believe it’s the hour after Enterprise,
assuming you get WB and UPN from the same time zone.)
Expect to see it advertised during
Smallville, and vice versa. (I’m honestly
surprised they didn’t move Seventh Heaven
and run these shows back-to-back.)
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer
This is a story about some people trying to grow up
amidst dozens of demons that want to destroy, hurt,
exploit, and otherwise make life generally unpleasant
for most average humans. It’ll stay where it is in
UPN’s Tuesday night lineup.
Firefly
Fox is a bit upset at having passed on airing
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer when Joss Whedon
still pitched it to them. This time, they have
decided that they’re not going to make the same
mistake. They’re running Joss Whedon’s new show
(which has nothing to do with Buffy) on
Friday nights this fall.
Smallville
The WB started running this show last September.
I’ve made sure I haven’t missed an episode since the
premier. It’s flawed, but very promising, and one of
the best Superman adaptations I’ve seen.

One thing to consider…
…is that Buffy is probably on its last year. I can’t remember is UPN has confirmed this or not. We’ll have to wait and see.
Angel or Smallville
Buffy‘s on it’s last legs. Firefly might be good, but I don’t know yet… Bird’s of Prey sounds like it’ll be just up my alley, but… the hour right after Enterprise? That’s The West Wing‘s time slot, and I think it’ll get killed in the ratings. TWW is the only non-SF show that I watch, and it’ll take some soul-searching to decide which to pickup. I’ll probably try BoP, in hopes that it can last. BTW, what about Andromeda or Mutant X?
Re: Angel or Smallville
I get UPN and WB from the East coast and
WB, Fox, ABC, CBS, and NBC from the West coast, so the
time conflict isn’t a big deal for me on Birds Of
Prey. (I’ve never seen The West Wing
anyway…) As for Andromeda and Mutant
X, I haven’t watched either, although I’ve been
tempted to watch Mutant X to see what John Shea
and Victoria Pratt have been up to since Lois and
Clark and John Woo’s Once A Thief.
Smallville
Smallville would be the better choice because it is becoming more and more watched and the story is becoming more complexed. I would love to read more Smallville reviews.
Oh and you should watch Mutant X reruns this summer. If you love John Shea, you will love the show. :)
I’d really prefer Andromeda, but…
After that I’d pick Smallville since it is one I watch on a somewhat regular basis. After that, Birds of Prey sounds good. I spent several years reading DC comics and I really like that universe. My fave has always been Superman, though.

Or Birds of Prey… Although I’m a really big smallville fan, so it’d be interesting to see other opinions.
I Vote Firefly…
I’m a sucker for dark post-apocalyptic stories and with Max and Dark Angel gone, I’ve got my hopes pinned on Firefly. From the Firefly site: “Taking place roughly five hundred years in the future, in the wake of the newly established Union Of Planets, Firefly tells the story of the crew of Serenity, a small, incredibly mobile transport spaceship of class firefly (whose aft end lights up, hence the name). The crew of the Serenity will take any job, whether it is legal or not, to stay afloat and put bread on the table.
Joss Whedon came up with the idea for Firefly while reading an account of the Battle of Gettysburg. The time period in the series is a version of the Reconstruction era. The captain of Serenity is a war veteran of a huge war to unite the planets. “I wanted to make something that’s about a guy who fought for the South, lost and doesn’t like anybody anymore,” Whedon says. “This show isn’t about the people who made history; it’s about the people history stepped on. It’s about their lives and their struggles to keep their ship alive — as well as the search for meaning in a very dark place. [Firefly] is kind of a Western in the sense that they ride to the border towns, these planets that are barely inhabited, because they want to stay away from the big government, the big radar.”
I say cover something from the beginning so we can all join the fun.

3. Smallville
I think Firefly sounds the best.
I like the idea of a scifi reconstruction era. It sounds like it could have a lot of potental. So Firefly is my first pick.
My second choice is Birds of Prey.
And finally Angel.
Well..
Seeing as how the only thing on that list I’ll be watching is Smallville, I suppose that’s my vote.
How about Farscape? That’s gonna be on this fall I think, and it owns, well, all those other shows. :)

I don’t get the sci-fi channel in my area,
so I get that show “late,” ie. the episodes are months old
the first time they’re aired here. (At least, that’s my
understanding.)

Actually, turns out season 4 is starting next week (June 7th). Hurrah.
Actually I don’t get the sci-fi channel either, I get Space (I’m in Quebec). They run FS on saturdays at 2 or something, but they’re somewhere in season 2 right now I think, and they aren’t showing them in order either, but their website mentions season 4 starts in fall 2002. Oh well, that’s what P2P is for right?
Still, even late FS reviews could be pretty cool (can you tell I love FS? Anyhow, thanks for taking the time out to reply.

I do not and will not use P2P to access songs or TV shows
I don’t legally own on media sold by the entity that owns
the rights.
As it stands, I’m not sure I’ll have time to watch all this
stuff each week as it is. (Six hours a week will be a lot
during sweeps. Other weeks will probably see reruns from
at least one of these shows.) I haven’t started watching
Farscape, Andromeda, CSI,
24, etc. because of time constraints. I should
have more time next year, but I hate jumping into a show
after it’s been on for a while, so the only shows I’m going
to start watching this fall are the new ones, hence the
list above.

Okay, I Didn’t Realize there was So Much television that I Wanted To Watch. The 6 Hours You Mentioned, Plus Farscape.
That Said, I’d Like You To Review Firefly. There Are A billion And a Half Sites For Buffy And Angel, And I Bet That A Few will Start Up For Firefly As Well, But Most Of The People Who Watch Buffy And Angel Are Not Hardcore Sci-Fi Fans, And I’d Love To See A Review Of A Sci-Fi Show From A Sci-Fi Fan.
Birds of Prey
I don’t like Angel (or Buffy) and wasn’t impressed with Smallville.
BoP sounds interesting though.
