Weekly Digital Disk Picks for March 30th, 2010

This week’s format is highly experimental, but quite compact. Do you like it?

Title DVD Release(s) Blu-Ray Release(s) Comment(s)
The Abbott and Costello Show: The Complete Series Collector’s Edition DVD
Afghan Star DVD Alex: Documentary about Afghanistan’s version of “American Idol”. I haven’t seen this particular documentary, but I’ve listened to and watched other programs covering this show, and the story of this program is extremely impressive.
Alice In Wonderland (Disney Animated) Special Un-Anniversary Edition DVD
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel Single Disc DVD Two Disc DVD Blu-Ray
Aquarion: Complete Series Box Set S.A.V.E. DVD Alex: This is one of the many super robot series that popped up after the success of Evangelion to sort of cash in on that series’ success by putting out a similarly dark in tone super robot series. Think of it like the Iron Age of comics, only we’re finally starting to come out of it now… sort of.
Collateral Blu-Ray
An Education DVD Blu-Ray
Footprints on the Moon: 50 Years of Apollo 11 DVD
Kanon: Complete Series Box Set S.A.V.E. DVD Alex: S.A.V.E stands for “Super Amazing Value Edition”. Or, to translate – “We’ve made back the cash into localizing it and dubbing it, so we can now release the series for cheaper, so people who wanted to get it earlier but couldn’t for cost reasons, now can afford it.”
The Killer DVD Blu-Ray Alex: Dragon Dynasty release of one of John Woo’s most famous Heroic Bloodshed films (behind A Better Tomorrow). It’s also John Woo’s first film to have a gunfight in a church.
Lupin The 3rd Episode 0: First Contact DVD Alex: Made for Television movie from 2002 describing the first fateful heist that brought together expert marksman Jigen, con artist, cat burglar and all-around femme fatale Fujiko Mine, master swordsman and thirteenth-generation thief Goemon Ishikawa XIII, Interpol investigator Inspector Zenigata, and third-generation master thief Arsène Lupin III
Negima!? Season 2 DVD Alex: Brick of the second season of a series that appears to have eschewed the slightly more serious shonen melodrama of the manga in favor of fanservice-heavy slapstick comedy.
The Real Housewives of New Jersey: Season One DVD
Robin Williams: Weapons of Mass Destruction DVD
Ouran High School Host Club: The Complete Series DVD Blu-Ray Alex: Animated series about a girl who is roped into being a member of her High School’s Host Club. A host club is like a Hostess club, but for girls to talk to pretty boys. A hostess club is, well, just read the wikipedia entry.
Sherlock Holmes DVD Blu-Ray Reviewed here.
Soul Eater: Part 2 DVD Alex: The continuation of the new Shonen series on the block.
Sports Night: Season One DVD
The Story of Math DVD Blaine: All I know is the title, but I’m interested.
Strike Witches: The Complete First Season DVD Alex: So, this is a very fanservice-heavy series about teenage girl magic users with machine guns putting on a mecha harness so they can fly, and taking up machine guns to fight alien invaders.

Finally, the picks of the week. Blaine says, “Sherlock Holmes or Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. You can’t go wrong with either.” Alex says, “I haven’t seen Sherlock Holmes, but I have seen The Killer, and it’s one of John Woo’s most famous films for a reason, which is why it’s my pick of the week.

  1. “The Killer” is one of my favourite John Woo movies, right behind “Hard Boiled” which IMO has slightly better action scenes. I’d get the blu-ray if I didn’t already have it on DVD.

  2. It’s more compact in some ways but much less compact is others. I think it would work better if there was some way you could put the comments under the entry (and maybe indented slightly so as not to be confused with the titles — I know you can work this out with the table HTML).

  3. I’m a sucker for Robin Williams’ stand-up, and I loved the new Sherlock Holmes, but my pick has to be Sports Night Season One. No one watched it, but damn it was smart and funny.
