Weekly Digital Disk Picks for April 6th, 2010

Title DVD Release(s) Blu-Ray Release(s)
9 Deluxe
Ally McBeal: Season Two DVD
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans DVD Blu-Ray
Battlestar Galactica Complete Series DVD Complete Series Blu-Ray and season two
Comments: The previous complete series box was more elaborate and collectable, but did not include “The Plan.” This box is less fancy and includes “The Plan.”
Blood Ties Complete Series DVD Complete series Blu-Ray
Brothers Five Blu-Ray
Comments: Alex: Another Wuxia film from the Shaw Brothers. It’s not one of the well known classics… at least not that I know of. But, then again, just about all the Shaw Brothers classics had their names horribly changed when they were released in the US (such as 36th Chamber of Shaolin being renamed Shaolin Master Killer).
Cocoon Blu-Ray
Code Geass Leouch of the Rebellion: R2, Part 4 DVD.

Collector’s Edition

The Delightful Forest Blu-Ray
Comments: Alex: The second of our trifecta of Shaw Brothers films, and one with (going by the cover art) a misleading title.
Dirt! The Movie DVD
Dreamscape Blu-Ray
Hart and Soul: The Hart Family Anthology DVD
Comments: Alex: Collection of various matches involving the Hart Family during their career in the WWE. There isn’t as much Owen in here as I’d like. Then again, I think Owen and Davey Boy Smith could each merit their own 3-disk sets.
The Heroic Ones Blu-Ray
Comments: Alex: Yet more Shaw Brothers.
Hidamari Sketch X 365: Complete Collection DVD
Comments: Alex: I had to look this one up. This is a anime series about a bunch of artists living togeather in an apartment complex. Very slice-of-life. It’s adapted from a yonkoma (four-panel) comic strip.
Jade Blu-Ray
Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens Complete Collection DVD
Comments: Alex: This looks like a very odd comedy series, involving Shinto dieties attempting to collect worshippers, while one of them has apparently converted to Catholicism.
The Lord of the Rings (live action) Trilogy
Comments: This includes the theatrical releases ONLY, not the extended editions.
The Lord of the Rings (1978 animated) DVD Blu-Ray
Lucky Star Anime Legends Collections DVD
Comments: Series brick of the first of the two series that Kyoto Animation worked on between the first season and second seasons of Haruhi (the other being K-On).
Mobile Suit Gundam 00: Season 2, Part 1 DVD.

Special Edition

Murder.com DVD
The Natural Blu-Ray
Naruto Shippuden Vol. 8 DVD
The New Adventures of Black Beauty: Season Two DVD
A Nightmare on Elm Street Blu-Ray
Poseidon Blu-Ray
The Relic Blu-Ray
Rental Magica Part 2 DVD
Simon and Simon: Season Four DVD
The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) Blu-Ray
The Unusuals DVD

Finally, the picks of the week. Blaine says, “snag yourself the complete Battlestar Galactica if you haven’t already.” Alex says, “I agree with Blaine, though if you’re into wrestling, the Hart collection is probably worth picking up.”

  1. Is this altered comment format more readable? I’d still prefer to find some way to put an extra border around an entry and its comments, but now the list is at least shorter to scroll through.

    • It’s not bad, if you could maybe offset the comments by a column or leave out the “Comments” so that’s just a blank field I think it’d be even better.

      • I agree with Scifi^2, just leave out the “Comments:” text in the first column.

I like this format better than the one from last week.

    • Yeah, I’d go maybe (and I hope the formatting holds…):

      | DVD | BluRay | Comments
Lord of the Rings | X | X | This is the complete live action blah blah blah

Hope that makes sense – I’d pay 50 cents for a preview button right about now!

      • Gah! that should be:

Yeah, I’d go maybe (and I hope the formatting holds…):

        Name | DVD | BluRay | Comments
Lord of the Rings | X | X | This is the complete live action blah blah blah

        I hope.

    • It like work better like so:

Title in a cell that is colspan=2, then DVD / BR in a single cell
Comments on the next line, but just leave one blank cell first (just containing a & nbsp; ) and have the comments be colspan=”3″. Leave off the word “comments”, too, the indentation alone should enough to denote it.

Using that overlapping column for the end of the title and the beginning of the comments should help stop the title from being squished. It could further be helped with hard limits on the column size for DVD/BR.

(sorry if it posted twice, it seemed to sit there and time out the first attempt)

  2. I like that you are playing around with it, but I don’t think it’s there yet.

The title should be more prominent, then the comment, and the dvd/blueray section should be less prominent. Right now bluray/dvd is by far the biggest section when it should be the smallest.

The title is hard to read cause it so squished to the left hand side.

  3. If we’re going to use this format, the chart lines need to be clearer (at least, as I see it). I find it a bit confusing and aesthetically awkward.

Finally, the picks of the week. Blaine says, “snag yourself the complete Battlestar Galactica if you haven’t already.”

Absolutely– but perhaps disregard the final season.
