Pitch Trailer for “Mortal Kombat Rebirth” out

Earlier this week Mortal Kombat fans were rather surprised to find a trailer online for something calling itself “Mortal Kombat Rebirth”. The trailer, done entirely in live-action, featured actors Michael Jai White as Jax and Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade, and took a much more realistic take on the franchise. Over the days after the trailer, from various sources we’ve put together where the trailer came from and why. Details and embedded video of the trailer below the cut. Warning – this trailer is NSFW and should be considered equivalent to a “Red Band” trailer.

Latino Review has compiled the general information on the film, but the story first broke that this was a pitch for a film instead of a game by a tweet from Jeri Ryan’s twitter account.

For those waiting on watching this trailer until they get home, the film is an R-rated take on the Mortal Kombat series, which removes the more fantastical and mythological elements of the prior films (and the games), and replaces them with a grittier modern setting, with elements of body horror.

While this trailer looks good and all, I don’t like it. Part of what distinguished Mortal Kombat from other fighting games in general is the “mythology” the game had both literal (Raiden, the war between Earth Realm and Outworld, characters like Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung, etc.) and figurative (the series continuity). This movie would get rid of all of that, turning it into, basically, a “hunting a serial killer movie” with a side of martial arts.

What do the rest of you think. Would you go see this movie, if it was green lit for a full feature?
