"Buffy" Immoral?

Well according to right-wing Parents Television Council, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is the most immoral show on the airwaves today. They also critizied shows like "Friends" for promiscuous lifestyles and "Will and Grace" for obvious reasons. They even have the affrontery to malign "CSI"

This from the same group that label Pax TV’s "Doc" as quality entertainment. They also list "Smallville" as family-friendly entertainment.

Read the article and send your comments to them (and post them here). It’s amazing that people still have this kind of bass-akward thinking in 21st century.

  1. Buffy vs. Smallville
I’d just like to point out that Buffy had, in
its first season, about as much sex as Smallville
did. I mean, Buffy had, what, one shot with
Angel shirtless? Lex did that when the reporter took over
    from his masseuse.

That is true, but in this past season we’ve had lesbians, a whole lot of unmarried sex, and a lot of hinting at sex. What makes the show so good, is how close to life it is in all ways except for the monsters. Take away the vampires/demons and I could find just about everything in the show in my life. Besides Buffy isn’t immoral, those people are just inhibited

Depends on your definition of “immoral”, some say there’s a lot of “violent sex” in Buffy that sends the wrong message — it’s a whole seminar at this year’s ConJose (Friday 10:00am CC J2)

Forgetting the vampires/demons for a moment, when was the last time you had sex so rough your house fell down?

well I’ve broke two beds and one kitchen table. About 6 months ago I needed 8 stitches to close the scratch marks in my back :) all scars I wear proudly. I wouldn’t consider that sex violent so much as just a good hard f**K

  2. Morality

Let’s approach this from a non-enlightened, conservative Christian point of view:

BtVS includes witchcraft, homosexuality, and teenagers deciding to have sex outside of marriage. All no-no’s in mainstream Christianity. It just doesn’t include them, however, it portrays them as natural, normal parts of life. It practically encourages them. One could make the case that Joss Whedon was pushing an agenda.

Whether you personally hold this belief system or not, I think we can safely say that Buffy (from about the second season on) promotes behavior that is considered unethical and/or immoral by the majority of mainstream Christianity.

Go ahead and whine, complain, or shake your enlightened head in disbelief, but that is the way it is.

Agreed. But, to call Buffy the “worst” show on TV is just wrong. Even with a fundamentalist morality, most Soap Opera’s should score a lot worse. If their limiting themselves to prime-time, I might give it to them. I personally like Buffy, and would even normally let me children watch it. But last season was too chock full of attempted rape, dating abuse, and murder for me to accept. As an adult, I enjoy the series, and the “hard times” were integral to the ongoing story, but they are right in that Buffy is not for kids anymore.
