Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “While I thought The Evil Dead was okay, I didn’t like it as much as I liked the later two films in the series, and there’s nothing else particularly interesting this week. I pass.” Blaine says, “I haven’t seen this season, but the earlier seasons of House, M.D. were great, so that’s on my must-have list. Those hesitating a little may want to check out next week’s list before committing: there are some huge genre-on-disc products coming up in September.”
I’m sure my wife will be rushing out to get The Vampire Diaries, but I’m holding off for next week’s Smallville Season 9 release.
My sister loved Mutant X, I wonder if I should grab that one and give it a go…
If you do, you may want to know that the company releasing it is committed to releasing the entire series. Season one hits the last Tuesday of August, season two the last Tuesday in September, and season three the last Tuesday in October. For just over $60 Canadian, you can get her the entire series.
I think it’s kinda funny that vampires have moved from horror to fantasy. Says something about the current state of society…
I was thinking the same thing when I was classifying them here. The Buffy series mixed horror with comedy and other drama so effectively that the lines blurred, and it seems like other producers have taken that as permission to erase the lines completely and just remove horror entirely.
A historical progression also exists: Vampires begin as out-and-out villains with few-to-no redeeming qualities. The twentieth century humanizes and angstifies* them. Once they can be portrayed as heroic, their stories are no longer horror– so they become fantasy, and often (these days) romantic fantasy.
