Farscape Fans Fighting Back

Apparently fans of the sci-fi series aren’t going to take its cancellation lying down. SciFi.com has this article detailing their efforts, including a protest scheduled for today. Fight the good fight my friends!

P.S. Kudos to SciFi Channel for running the article even when it doesn’t jive with their own corporate decisions.

Update (9/12/02 @ 5:58pm EDT): Help save Farscape by using the images from here and link them to http://www.savefarscape.com

I was just watching CNN:Headline News and they had a several minute long segment on Farscape and the whole campaign. It was in their Hotwired(sp?) segment. While I dont see it up on their website yet (the last update is from yesterday), I am sure it will be there soon. It is good to see this whole movement getting some mainstream attention.

Considering that SciFi is doing articles about people banding together to save Farscape, I can’t help but get a nagging suspicion that all this has been engineered to either:

    • Boost ratings and get people who haven’t seen the show before to watch
    • – or –

    • To demand more money to advertise during the show due to the sizable and loyal fanbase that comes with it

But then maybe I’m just a cynic.

Even if you’re right, is it necessarily a bad thing? If their evil plot works and they get more viewers and/or more money from advertisers, we might just get a season 6 and 7.

To be fair to SciFi, season 4 was pretty weak and they claim to have lost viewers. If the costs of the show are continuing to rise as viewers decline, the correct business decision would be to dump the show.

On the other other hand, SciFi has not allowed the show to gain momentum. They show new episodes during the summer, when most people are out enjoying the weather, then starve fans for episodes for at least 4 months. They should be constantly running previous episodes so that new viewers can “get hooked” and get up to speed on the story line.
