Buffy Discussion – “Beneath You”

Why should John Doe get all the discussion columns? Tonight’s new Buffy, titled Beneath You, showed yet more evidence that James Marsters is one of the greatest actors on TV. Add your thoughts below. (Oh, by the way, if anyone would like to volunteer to write Buffy reviews, the templates can be provided.)

  1. lighter happier show?
I thought this season was supposed to be a happier experience then last season? I don’t think spike being insane and tortured makes for nice light viewing but it was definitely good. I never knew he could be such a good actor.
I was kinda disappointed in the tremors giant worm rip off but other then that the episode was fine. My one question is after stabbing the guy spike grabbed his head but only for a second. It looked pretty much the same when he hit buffy after she came back, the pain was a reflex and wasn’t caused by the chip. Any guesses as to if the chip is still working?

I’d offer to review but I’m biased and lazy.

I Do, But Then Again, I Thought Spike Should have Been Staked By Now.

I’m Guessing, but It Looks Like That Chip Didn’t have An Effect. However, for As Psycho As It made Him, It’s Possible The Chip’s Shorted Out by The Soul, And Just Making Him Go Crazy. Basically, The Shock Causes His Logic Circut To Go Haywire, Rather Than Hitting His Pain.

Also: I’m Not Convinced It Was Spike. That Shapechanging Thing In The Last Episode Might Have Taken His Form.

Also, I think The Shapechanging Thing Was The First Evil (Who Took Jenny Calender’s form Somewhere In Season Three. Amends, IIRC.) I Think That We’ll Be Seeing Tara Again, As The Voice Of The First Slayer (A La Restless), And It’s Going To Be A First Slayer v. First Evil Sorta Thing.

I’d offer to review but I’m biased and lazy.

Same Here. I Don’t Think I Could Keep Up.

  2. Thumbs up!
I thought the episode was supurb, especially the end with Spike burning on the Cross as Buffy looked at him in horror, both for the depth of his love for her and because of what it’s made him do. Much of last season she treated him like a cheap sex toy (not altogether a bad thing) and now she has to deal with what’s come out of it.

Anya seems to be at a crossroads as well, both with the vengeance demon thing and with Xander. It’d be cool to see them get back together again.

I’m wondering if the mystery girls getting killed at the start of each show are latent Slayers. I mean, if a Slayer dies another instantly takes her place, which would mean there’d have to be a lot of potential Slayers in the world. Maybe the 1st Evil is trying to make sure that when it kills Buffy and Faith, there is no one left to become the next Slayer.

Best line: “Is there anyone here who hasn’t slept with each other?” which gets a response from Xander and Spike.

  3. Loved It
I am really enjoying the new season, even though it is only two episodes old! I am enough of a romantic to want Anya and Xander to get back together and to have Spike and Buffy be together. Maybe she was not only feeling pitty, but the stirrings of emotions for him as a human being, something she has not seen in him before.

I think the chip is no longer working, but violence is triggering memories that his soul is having a hard time dealing with. Angel and Darla both had problems with memories and guilt feelings when they had their souls restored.

  4. Mr. Morp Question
Is anybody else out there wondering why Mr. Morph didn’t change into Tara? Maybe Amber Benson was too busy to work on that ep, but I can’t see why. And with Willow being led up as a powerful weapon against the big bad, I’m wondering if there’s more signifigance there than I noticed before.

What would prevent him from using Tara’s likeness that didn’t stop any of the others?

The only thing I can think of(and I shudder at the thought) is this: Maybe the First was already in control when Jonathan shot Tara. Maybe he was already wittling away at Willow’s power even then. And perhaps, since he had a direct involvement in her death, she’s protected from being used by him.

Or maybe I’m looking too deep into this, and Amber Benson has a busy schedule. :)
