Andromeda Discussion – “If The Wheel is Fixed”

Daemonik writes, Tonight is the season premier of Andromeda, so let the discussions happen here. I’ll try to remember that this is on Sundays and post it with the Angel columns. If I forget, remind us with the “story idea” option to your left.

  1. it was confusing (spoilers)

Spoilers. Don’t read this if you plan to watch it in the future.

What was even going on in this episode? You had illusions, mind control, and dimensional phase shifting, but there wasn’t a story. Who was the enemy?

The most interesting character to me is Trance Gemini. She is very complex. She seemed to cast some magic spell in this episode. There is all this talk of fate, but I don’t get the sense that the characters really grapple with it. Don’t they ever try to fight their fate? As for Andromeda, how can she have a fate?

Well, I hope Trance gets more screen time in the future.

By the way, Starhunter looks like it has a good premise. A bounty hunter in a sci-fi setting searches for his lost son, who could be anywhere in space. The setting twist is that humans are undergoing rapid evolutionary change. Unfortunately, I couldn’t see what was going on in the premeire episode because of the rapid splicing and dark colors. Maybe my eyes are going, but I honestly couldn’t follow the story in this one, either.

  2. Pliot Summary….
A bunch of really stupid stuff happenned for no discernable reason what so ever.

    Dialog…. sucked.

    Plot…… Huh??!!

3 minutes of nothing but everyone rolling around on the floor…not as much fun as it sounds. A mysterious kitten appears for no good reason. Cremembers suddenly aquire the ability to do likewise. WTF!!

For a Season opener this does not bode well for the rest of the series.

I wasn’t getting the kitten either. Then when they said that the recording wasn’t really there, merely what Romi expected to see I really didn’t get the kitten.

My post Andromeda impression was mainly “WTF?”.

I also hated the ham-handed way they dealt with cosmetic changes for the new season. Tyr just magically loses his bone-blades (which I didn’t even notice until the final scene); unless they explore this further in another ep. it’s likely to go down in my personal Hall of Lame (along with this enitre episode). Then that horrible tacked-on “girl talk” scene just to show that Rommie changed her hair (which is a good thing, BTW) –why bother? It wouldn’t be the first time Rommie has changed her hair between episodes.

The episode should have been called Black Hole because the closer you looked at it the more it sucked.

I was actually starting to kind of get into this show by the end of last season but this piece of trash put me right off of it again. Whoever the writer was of this waste of airtime he should be fired right away…but knowing Hollywood he probably got a bonus.

  3. Gripes
    The kitten, ’nuff said.

If the video was of the Maru’s flight recorder during it’s last 5 minutes, why was it showing exterior shots, interior shots etc.? Shouldn’t it have concentrated on the interior cabin? I know this show has a tight budget but c’mon.

Okay, Harper is opening dimensional tunnels now in his spare time? I kinda used to like this show if only because it dealt somewhat realistically with the limitations of physics, but it seems they’ve decided to toss that one out the window.

Trance and Becca….. did they become gay and no one mentioned it? Lot’s of flirting going on.

If Tir erased Andromeda’s AI, how the f**k did she just “reboot”? There’s a difference between ‘erase’ and ‘shutdown’, would be nice if the writers figured that one out.

This whole fate, destiny, Ultimate Evil crap is wearing thin. There’s no way they can bring the series to any kind of satisfactory ending because the fight between good and evil never ends. Bleh.

Well, the tunnel was already there, so I think the major implausibility is that he could figure out how to manipulate it so quickly.

I think it was just bizarro-Beka doing the flirting. Still, I didn’t see Tyr coming on to Harper, so maybe there’s something there…

He specifically left the avatar’s personality intact, so that she could eventually ‘repopulate’ the main AI core. Remember, Rommie-bot is a scaled-down copy of the main AI, presumably with all the unique personality stuff intact.

Actually there’s a lot more credit to the writers for that
right there in my book… Cisco equipment, which, like
computers needs an OS, however, unlike computers, doesn’t
seem to need to be reinstalled every year, does the
      following:

Compressed image stored in Flash ROM containing the OS
image… On bootup, that image is decompressed… Settings
are then read from another Flash ROM address… Both the
OS and the settings are then in active memory, running the
system. If you erase the OS, you’re just simply erasing
the running config – a reboot will actually reload the
entire OS, and all the settings…

It’s a very smart way to run things, especially for
something like a star ship… I don’t trust Microsoft to
run my computer, let alone my Life
      Support
      system…

      Just my 2 cents…

Comparing he tecnology involved in running a self-aware artificial intelligence with a Cisco router is a bit of a stretch, don’t you think?

  4. What a mess
    Where do I start?

Missing crew shows up, acting goofy (obviously, within the first few seconds) and no one says anything.

What’s with the kitten in the log? What the?

Nice phase shifting, too bad the Andromeda’s sensors can’t detect that one second Tyyr and Bekka aren’t in the all, and then they are.

Where the hell did that cat come from?

Isn’t it cool how when gravity gets turned off you immediately float upwards to the ceiling? Always wondered how come the astronauts aren’t bouncing around inside the shuttle because we all know when gravity is absent, you’re pushed away from the floor.

FINALLY F*CKINGLY changed Rommie’s hair back to something besides the bowl-cut. Man I hated that.

Wish I could un-erase things by rebooting, how handy. Pretty damn easy to erase the core intelligence of a warship too eh?

What the hell? I’ve been following this show since it started, it’s getting worse.
