SFContario #1 a Success

SFContario made its first appearance this past weekend, and it proved a success, with guests such as Michael Swanwick, Robert J. Sawyer, Robert Charles Wilson, Julie Czerneda (who speaks at the start of the video), Karl Schroeder, Caitlin Sweet, Suzanne Church, and many, many others. Highlights include a launch of new titles by dark horror/sf/fantasy house ChiZine (I’ll be reviewing a couple of titles as soon as time permits), a number of readings of new work, and several excellent panels. The Yellow Peril panel which I helped establish with Derwin Mak and Eric Choi, and also featured Madeline Ashby and Chandler Davis, played to a full room and continued for about a half-hour afterward in the hall. As a side note, a tribute to Yellow Peril author Sax Rohmer, presented the day before by John Robert Colombo, led to a heated(ish) hallway discussion on racism.

Overall, a solid convention, small enough that people to ensure people were accessible but large enough to serve a range of interests. My only complaint is the hotel. The staff were great, but the place, an older establishment, has narrow halls, poor access for the disabled, and a neighbourhood that has seen less sketchy days.
