  1. Dark. – Soiler
This Episode Seemed Fairly Dark And Broody By The End. I Think We’ll See More Of That Kid From Home Improvement. He Was Bitten By a Demon, Which Is How The First Vampire Was Formed, So It’s Possible That They’re Going To Start A New Breed Of Vamp Or Something. It Worked For Blade II.

(Obviously I Love Speculating On Buffy Plots. That’s What Makes Them So Good.)

What I want to know is, what happened when the cops showed up? Did Buffy hide the magic stuff, and let cult-boy go? Or did she/will she have to explain all the weirdness? If they called an ambulance to the scene, then I doubt they would have had time to clean up the burnt Demon-Nuggets(TM) and candles. And since Mayor Quimby isn’t covering things up anymore, someone should be starting to ask questions. If it were me, I’d have told the almost-truth (that there was a ritual, but it was a prank), and made sure the boys at least got in trouble.

But yes, if the sitcom kid shows up again, you can bet it will be as a demonized badguy. Heck, the guy’s evil enough as it is, all it would take is a little demon influence to make him a monster.

  2. Power and Powerless…
Good ep, reality at the end – even when the good guys win, “bad” things happen. I had a sister-in-law die of an aortic rupture, it happens and it is brutally shocking. Lots of interesting foreshadowing going on which will undoubtably build up to a “powerful” climax…first ep ending with “not about good or evil, it’s about power”, Buffy later asking if she can give detention – ie, can she have the power of authority over others which is different from her inherent Slayer powers; Willow struggling with overcoming her previous misuse of power, this ep, showing what it’s like to be ultimately powerless…

    • Re: Power and Powerless…
Wow, very astute of you. The detention thing seemed like a throwaway line at the time, but it fits the pattern. Power. The principal is a new “power” too, I wonder how he fits into this. For a bit, I thought he might be a possible new love interest for Buffy, but OTOH, by scooby gang standards he’s a geezer. So maybe he’s a bad guy, or a good guy. Or just a regular guy, there must be some of *those* even in the buffyverse.

That’s an excellent point. It also puts the interview she had with the female victim of a bully into a new perspective. Bullying is about leveraging power over someone, and that girl fought back.

And the whole thing with Dawn this season is a power struggle – parent vs. child overtones in a sibling battle royale over who is who’s sister…Buffy had an interesting and cleverly presented interview with Dawn on just this point, after all…

Well, turns out that the girl was the bully ;- )

No, she wasn’t. She wasn’t just a victim, but she wasn’t a bully. The other person bullied (leveraging power over another, generally in a choice, such as “choose between handing over your lunch money or getting beat up”) while she is guilty of aggrivated assault.

Bullies aren’t defined by violence, they’re defined by exerting power over someone else. I’ve had this grilled into my head in Education Psychology 301 all term.
