Weekly Digital Disk Picks for December 21st, 2010

This is the last batch of releases before December 25. It’s a short list, but it does have a couple of titles that our readers would probably call doorcrashers.

Salt Theatrical Edition, Deluxe Unrated DVD Deluxe Unrated Blu-Ray
Blaine: I haven’t seen this, but I’m interested in checking it out to see how well the rewrite worked. It was conceived with Tom Cruise in the lead, and when he turned it down, it was rewritten for Angelina Jolie.

Blaine: Is A&E trying to recapture the ratings of “Dog the Bounty Hunter” using a lead who won’t end up in jail?
Gene Simmons Famliy Jewels Season Four, Season Five
Science Fiction
Caprica: Season 1.5 Amazon.com
Blaine: This DVD set hits weeks before the U.S. broadcast marathon of the episodes. Between that and the illegal downloads sourced from the Canadian broadcasts that held to the pre-cancellation special, I predict horrible ratings for the marathon.
Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus Amazon.com
Blaine: Are all of these Mega Shark movies in a single continuity? Does SyFy think they’ve got a Godzilla on their hands or something? Or does reusing the same CGI model just make these movies that much cheaper?
Stonehenge Apocalypse Amazon.com
Alex: Well, at least they’re honest about how rec***ulous this film’s plot is – A scientist discovers a dramatic increase in the emmination of electromagnetic radiation being emitted from Stonehenge, and soon the structure starts moving on its own accord and vaporizing people, while the scientist despirate tries to persuade the military to take action. I couldn’t read the description of this film, much less re-write it, without thinking of some twist on the Monty Python “Bells” sketch, except with Stonehenge instead of a church.
Sports
WWE Survivor Series 2010 Amazon.com
Western
The Virginian: Complete Season Two Amazon.com

Finally, the picks of the week. Blaine says, “I haven’t actually seen anything on this week’s list to recommend with confidence, but The Guild and Futurama are on my must-see list.” Alex says, “Nothing here is on my must see list, but Stonehenge Apocalypse looks just trancendently stupid enough that if I can get some people to inflict this movie on share it with, I might watch it.”

One reply

  1. My wife and I wanted to see Stonehenge Apocalypse because of who was in it: Misha Collins (Castiel from Supernatural), Torri Higginson (Dr. Weir from SG:A), and Peter Wingfield (The evil guy from pretty much anything, Highlander, SG:1, X2, Smallville, and pretty much any other show on TV he’s found his way onto).

Obviously SyFy’s movies are mostly cheese that won’t be winning any awards (not even Razzies) but sometime’s they’re funny to watch just so you can see how bad they are, or to question why a certain actor would have gotten within 1,000 ft of the thing. Case in point: Mothman was pretty bad, but Jewel Staite made it tolarable.
