2011 Oscar Nominations

The 2011 Academy Award nominees are out today.

With the exception of Inception and Toy Story 3, genre films were pretty much relegated to the technical awards.

For the second year, we have 10 nominees for Best Picture and we get to speculate if genre films would even make the cut of five like there used to be.

One thing that did surprise me was Tron: Legacy not getting a nomination for Visual Effects. I was kind of hoping they could win one, just right the wrong of the first film being snubbed because “they used computers, and that’s cheating.”

So, what are your takes on the nominees and what genre films do you think will walk away with a statue?

  1. The only win I’d like to see is “How to Train Your Dragon” for animated film. I loved Toy Story 3, great film, but I really enjoyed “Dragon” and want to reward Dreamworks for making something that wasn’t overstuffed with pop culture references, fart jokes, and crude humor.

  2. I’m disappointed that Summer Wars didn’t get a nomination for Best Animated feature. Apparently, if only one more film applied for a Best Animated Feature nomination, the number of slots would have gone up from 3 to 5.

    • I think Pixar has scared the crap out of the competition. They make great films, but it’s a little disappointing that they dominate the category.

Though, something tells me that “Cars 2” won’t be up to the same level as “Up” and “Toy Story 3.” Of course, Dreamworks entry for the year is “Kung Fu Panda 2.” Not exactly stiff competition.
