Weekly Digital Disk Picks for Feburary 8th, 2010

While this week may be lacking in quality recent titles, it more than makes up for it with quality classic titles. Also, there are a lot of love stories due this Tuesday before the Valentine’s Day weekend…

Title DVD Release(s) Blu-Ray Release(s)
Action
National Treasure Amazon.com
Blaine: This was surprisingly enjoyable. Also, it’s an action movie that you can watch with an eight year old; language and violence are toned down without actually feeling like they’re toned down. This is about solving the puzzles before the bad guys, not about killing them first.
National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets Amazon.com
Blaine: I still haven’t seen this one, but I’d like to based on the original.
Ong Bak 3 One disc DVD only, one disc DVD + digital copy, two disc DVD + digital copy Blu-ray
Alex: This is Tony Jaa’s last film before he decided to retire from acting and become a monk.
The River Wild Amazon.com
Wild Target Amazon.com Amazon.com
Anime
Chrome Shelled Regios: Part One (Limited Edition) Amazon.com, rightstuf.com
Comes with an art box that can hold parts one and two, plus a flag for the Zuellni Academy City (the city where the heroes are based)
Chrome Shelled Regios: Part Two Amazon.com, rightstuf.com
A bit more about the setting – the series is based in a post apocalyptic future where humanity is forced to survive in domed cities, and fend off attacks from mutant monsters called Contaminoids.
Dirty Pair: The Original TV Series Pt. 2 Amazon.com, rightstuf.com
Dragon Ball: The Complete Movie Collection Amazon.com, rightstuf.com

Blaine: Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant in a classic screwball comedy. Highly recommended.
Rebel Without a Cause Amazon.com
Comedy
Beverly Hillbillies (Special Edition) Amazon.com
Blaine: These are seemingly random episodes from the early seasons of the series.
Drop Dead Gorgeous Amazon.com
Blaine: This is not the entertaining mockumentary, but some Jeremy London vehicle I’ve never heard of before.
Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, Vol. 6 Amazon.com
Old Dogs Amazon.com
Uncle Buck Amazon.com

Columbo: Mystery Movie Collection 1991-1993 Amazon.com,

The Guardian: Final Season Amazon.com,
Reality
Project Runway: Season Eight Amazon.com
Romance
Beauty and the Briefcase Amazon.com Amazon.com
Enchanted Amazon.com
Blaine: This is a surprisingly great romantic comedy. I have two huge complaints about the genre in general: predictability, and the habit of starting the movie with at least one romantic partner in a relationship already, followed by subsequent infidelity. This movie avoids both traps, and it’s loaded with references to classic Disney films for the eagle-eyed film geek to find.
The Romantics Amazon.com
You Again Amazon.com Amazon.com
Science Fiction
Barb Wire Amazon.com
Doctor Who: The Mutants (Story 63) Amazon.com
Doctor Who: The Movie Amazon.com
Blaine: This was Paul McGann’s entire run as the Doctor, ending the original series to be following by the Russell T. Davies relaunch.

Alex: Though McGann would follow this up with a not-unsubstancial run of audio dramas with Big Finish.

Finally, the picks of the week. Blaine says, “in a week that offers new Columbo, my pick will always be Columbo.” Alex says, “As the T-Shirt says, you never forget your first Doctor, and my first exposure to Doctor Who was the TV movie, and that’s my pick of the week.”
