Movie Discussion – The Adjustment Bureau

This weekend saw the latest Philip K. Dick adaptation to reach the big screen, starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. How did it turn out?

  1. The actors worked very well together, which probably helped smooth over some plot issues. Overall, I enjoyed it. It had some really nice visuals with the doors, and it was a fun ride up to the end. On the down side, it was a bit predictable; I kept hoping for a twist that never came.

  2. I agree that the chemistry between Matt Damon and Emily Blunt was a strong point of the film. The visuals were smooth and in line with the flow of the narrative. The story adaptation was clear and kept Dick’s message and tone very well I thought. The pacing of the film was uneven though, and I thought it could have been shortened by 10 minutes or so to improve it.

As far as science fiction, Adjustment Bureau is mildly thought provoking but not much new. Dick’s many variations on the basic theme challenging our acceptance of “reality” are well known, and I had trepidation prior to this one due to the popular lead actor (I am still recovering from “I Robot” and “The Day the Earth Stood Still”). I was pleasantly surprised with how intact the source material remained and the quality of the attempt. I recommend it.

You had trepidations about Matt Damon? I find it’s usually the director and script that makes or breaks a movie, and not usually the actor, and especially not one like Matt Damon. I hadn’t heard of this director before so that was where my trepidation was. However I thought it was great.

I had “this is like Asimov’s Second Foundation” in my head the whole time.
