Angel Discussion – “Supersymmetry”

This is a Fred-centric episode named after a theory that connects cosmology to particle physics. It’s guaranteed to get my attention.

  1. We see a side to Fred that we really haven’t seen before. She’s starting to get some confidence going since her ordeal on Pylea. The vengeance thing was not totally unexpected though.

Angel’s little memory trick was interesting too. The question is whether Gunn actually saw the replay that we did or if that was just a visual aid for us.

Looks like there might be some trouble between Gunn and Fred on the horizon given that Fred didn’t think Gunn had it in him to do what he did. I think Wes knew though. I certainly suspected; it fits his character. Fred’s line about revenge when she met the professor was memorable too.

Is it just me or is Lilah starting to be even less interesting as a villain?

I think that was a visual aid for us. Gunn didn’t react to the set-up right away, and didn’t seem at all surprised to what would have been a new ability in the vampire canon. It just seemed like Angel was working from memory, and all Gunn saw were the chairs.

Also, I have to give the writers credit for the jargon that Fred was throwing around. Everything up to the scene where she told the professor about Pylea was dead-on, and not the kind of improvised technobabble you see in some genre shows. (That scene seemed a bit off to me.) This has traditionally been the case with Fred’s physics-related dialogue. The fact that it’s rarely plot-related seems to give them the freedom to find somebody who knows this stuff and have them write that piece of her dialogue. I’m impressed by the amount of effort that goes into that, considering how few audience members would spot the difference.

  2. Could have been better

The jealous professor thing was kinda boring. Instead, a plot by some evil power to prevent humanity from learning something it doesn’t want us to know would have been far more interesting.

And what was with the insane Fred writing on the walls, can anybody say Firefly?

Actually, Fred wrote stuff on the walls when she was in Pylea and then when she came home so Firefly is copying Angel.

I thought the episode was pretty neat. I am glad Cordelia came back to the hotel.

Did It Bug Anyone Else That There Are Some Physicists That Can Walk Around, Talk, Or Even Type (Like On The Cell Phone) A Few Things, And Cause A Portal To Open? Will We See That Trick Again?

**Scene:Dark Alley, Huge Demon Advancing On A Defenseless Fred.
Fred Backs Up, Says A Few Words.
      Portal Opens.
      Demon Falls In.

  3. Brannon and Bragga SUCK
I’m pretty pissed at them for ruining a perfectly good show.
Of course they’re FAR to dumb to know what a good story is.
The biggest thing that stands out to me is the Klingons. There are a million holes, but this is the biggest and so I’ll focus there.

For how many years have we seen Klingons…? 25? Since the first series the Klingons are the pirates of space. They are mean, tough, and smart (they are bloodthirsty and their zeal gets in the way sometime, but they’ve built the tech and can really kick butt in battle). TNG, DS9, and even voyager really kept the idea going. Klingons almost look forward (with a sickening glee) to dying with honor. Heck, they’d rather die with honor than feast on bloodworms.

Even the non-trained klingons are tough and ready for battle because it’s a Klingon trait, not something they teach in the army. Sure, the freighter drivers probably don’t have the level of intelligence that a bird of prey gunner would have, but they’re NOT wussies and they’re not gonna walk away from a fight. The Klingons didn’t notice the nice new weapons that the miners are brandishing?!

Add this to the fact that Archer has always been relatively tough and antagonistic (for a human) and he hides behind the planet when he could have easily just blown up the ship and nobody would have known better. Dead Klingons don’t talk much. eh?

Trek has a loyal following a built in story and history. It’s a real shame to see buffoons like B&B screw it up.
