1. I finally caved in and bought a Blu-Ray player yesterday, picked up a couple movies I didn’t already own but nothing that would really show off Blu-Ray really.

   I may have to buy Tron: Legacy even though I haven’t yet seen it, I’m sure I’d like it despite what some others have said about the film.

   Any other “must have” titles for Blu-Ray that anyone recommends?

   • I was particularly impressed with the new “Casino Royale” on Blu-Ray. If you want a tech showcase, look for Oscar winners in the Cinematography and sound categories. (You can kill two birds with one stone when the Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition trilogy hits Blu-Ray on June 28.) I’ve also been impressed with the authoring on the Stanley Kubrick films and Lost. Generally speaking, though, if you pick up a title just to show off the tech, you tend to be disappointed. Find a title you already know you love and start there.

     • Well I wouldn’t drop the kind of cash they seem to want for most Blu-Ray titles on a movie I didn’t enjoy to begin with, but I have somewhat diverse interests in film so I figured out of a few suggestions I might find a couple gems. I’ll drop Casino Royale in the blockbuster queue for Blu-Ray and give it a try. My wife isn’t a big Bond fan, but I tend to like them. At least I can test drive them that way.

       I already own LOTR extended editions on DVD, so I probably won’t be dropping $85+ on the Blu-Ray versions, but that would be an excellent choice otherwise. I also already own the Lost box set on DVD as well (I am in the middle of rewatching it right now, just started season 6 on Friday) Come this fall I’ll probably start looking at getting future seasons of TV shows on Blu-Ray, and the first “big” purchase will likely be the Smallville box set, which I’m assuming will be available on Blu-Ray.

       • Seasons 6-9 of “Smallville” are out on Blu-Ray already, and season 5 was out in HD DVD in the past. With the announcement that season 10 will hit Blu-Ray and DVD in November instead of the usual September, I’m starting to suspect the goal is to buy time to assemble a jumbo-series-in-a-box release in both formats for November. Nothing’s formally announced, but I’d be surprised if we don’t see it.

         • Yeah I’m hoping for a giant box set of Smallville 1-10, like the Stargate box set. We have bought 1-9 on DVD but we aren’t buying 10, we’re going to get the box set. (My wife and I are both big fans of the show).

           I hope they have a decent looking box, too. The Lost box set packaging is amazing.

           I’ve now shuffled around my Blockbuster queue a bit to have some Blu-Ray titles coming. We had picked up a couple of DVD/Blu-Ray combo packs in the last few months since I had been looking for a player, so we did watch Megamind last night, and it looked great.

           Now if only I had a 120Hz 1080p TV… My old 1080i TV from 2007 will have to do for now. :-)

   • I’ll mention the two obvious ones: Avatar and 300.

     • I just didn’t care for Avatar. Blasphemy to some, I know, but I just didn’t see what the big deal about it was. It was OK, not a waste of my time by any means, and it did look pretty, but I didn’t like it well enough to own it.

       I haven’t seen 300, I may have to put it in my queue. That isn’t typically my kind of movie but I’m interested in how the visuals look.
