Weekly Digital Disc Picks – May 10, 2011

This week’s #1 selling title spent time as #1 on the IMDB’s worst 100 movies of all time list. This is, basically, a week for legacy titles on Blu-Ray, most notably including the Alien franchise.

Anime
Chobits – The Complete Series – Anime Classics Amazon.com, rightstuf.com Amazon.com, rightstuf.com
Alex: Probably one of the more controversial romantic comedy series to come from CLAMP. The series follows a college student who gets a female android which is capable of growing beyond its programming (as opposed the androids owned by his peers, who can only do the functions they have software for). Ordering this from RightStuf gets you a refrigerator magnet of Chi (the female lead of the series).
Coffee Samurai/Hokisora Kiseki Amazon.com, rightstuf.com
A collection of two short OVAs (30 minutes each).
Junjo Romantica Season 2 Amazon.com, rightstuf.com
Season 2 of the Yaoi (gay romance) series.
Kiddy Grade – Anime Classics Amazon.com, rightstuf.com
Space opera series in the vein of a more comedic Lensmen.
Shiguri: Death Frenzy – Anime Classics Amazon.com Amazon.com
Blaine: An extremely bloody and gory samurai series. Not for children or the faint of heart.
Shingu: Secret of the Stellar Wars Amazon.com, rightstuf.com
New thinpack collection.
Classics (Cult)
Almighty Thor Amazon.com
Blaine: From the people who brought us “Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus.” This has absolutely nothing to do with the Marvel property; it’s a completely different product based on the same Norse legends.
Classics (Traditional)
My Little Chickadee Amazon.com
Blaine: One of the first talking picture comedies with actual star power. It was also considered pretty risque for its time, though that was almost exclusively driven by the banter that was written by stars Mae West and W.C. Fields.

Another Stakeout Amazon.com
Big Business Amazon.com
Cougars, Inc. Amazon.com Amazon.com
Blaine: This stars Denise Richards, who didn’t turn 40 until after filming was complete. Direct to video release.
Gross Anatomy Amazon.com
Home Improvement: 20th Anniversary Collection Amazon.com
Blaine: Yes, it ships in a giant Binford toolbox, and includes a Binford tape measure.
The Illusionist DVD/Blu-Ray combo
Blaine: From the creator of The Triplets of Bellville and an homage to the works of Jacque Tati. Those not familiar with Tati need look no further than Mr. Bean, who not only mimics the style of Tati, but outright steals his best gags. Tati worked on the script for this film, but didn’t actually produce it.
The Marrying Man Amazon.com
Money for Nothing Amazon.com
Some Like It Hot Amazon.com
Blaine: This ranked #1 on the American Film Institute’s top 100 comedies of all time list. I don’t know if I’d put it at #1, but it deserves to be high.
Straight Talk Amazon.com
V.I. Warshawski Amazon.com
Documentary
Nova – Smartest Machine On Earth Amazon.com
Nova episode on how IBM built Watson – this was a really interesting episode. Unfortunately, the Jeopardy episodes with Watson aren’t included on the disk.

An Innocent Man Amazon.com
Family
Bravestarr: The Complete Series Amazon.com
Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated, Season One Volume Two Amazon.com
Horror
Supernatural: Seasons 1-5 Amazon.com
Blaine: This doesn’t include the current season, nor is there a shrinkwrap version for Blu-Ray yet, as season two doesn’t hit Blu-Ray until this June.
Music / Musical
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never Amazon.com DVD/Blu-Ray Combo
Blaine: Amazon.com’s #1 selling title this week. Its average score on the IMDB is 1.2/10, which should place it at the “top” of their 100 worst movies of all time list. There are enough voters giving it marks in the 9-10 range that the Bayesian filter keeps it hovering just out of range. The fact that it was on that list the week it first came out, after many of his die-hard fans had placed votes, makes me wonder if the studio has hired people to vote for it and drag it out of the pit, though clearly I have no evidence of that. It may also suffer from inaccurate expectations. From what I’ve heard (from students who have seen it), they went in expecting a concert movie, and instead got the kind of behind the scenes footage that they’d expect as a bonus feature on a concert DVD.
Mystery
McMillan and Wife: Season 3 Amazon.com

No Strings Attached Amazon.com Amazon.com
Something Wild (Criterion Collection) Amazon.com Amazon.com

From the Jon Pertwee (third Doctor) years.
Doctor Who: Planet of the Spiders (Story 74) Amazon.com
Also from the Jon Pertwee years.
Sports
Wrestlemania 27 Regular edition, B004NJC0DE Amazon.com
Alex: This has the worst Wrestlemania main event of all time. No, that’s not totally true – Hogan beating Yokozuna is worse, but not by much.

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “I’m going with the Nova episode, even more since the Jeopardy episodes have aired, and Watson won.” Blaine says, “I haven’t seen The Illusionist, so I’m going with the Alien franchise. (Or, at least, the first two.)”

One reply

  1. I thought about going with the Alien Blu-Rays for my pick, except for the fact that the Alien Anthology is probably a much better buy then getting them individually.
