Alex: Considering the WWE’s habit of burying companies that aren’t them, I expected this DVD to serve as a backhanded tribute to some of the great workers who came through WWE. However, there are some pretty decent matches on here – and probably the only WWE DVD that to get a Jushin Thunder Liger match.
When It Was a Game: The Complete Collection Amazon.com
Superhero
Green Lantern: Emerald Knights DVD DVD/Blu-Ray combo
Blaine: Nathan Fillion voices Hal Jordan in this 84 minute anthology, based on the classic “Tales of the Green Lantern Corps” backup feature from the series through the 1980s.
Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology Amazon.com
Blaine: This includes Superman in both theatrical and director’s cut versions, Superman II in the theatrical and Richard Donner cut versions, Superman III, Superman IV: The Quest For Peace and Superman Returns. Bonus features include the Fleischer studios cartoons, Superman and the Mole-Men and Look, Up in the Sky! The Amazing Story of Superman, as well as the Super-Rabbit, Snafuperman and Stupor Duck Looney Tunes cartoons. As far as I can tell, it’s the content of the DVD ultimate edition with the Looney Tunes cartoons substituted for Bryan Singer’s journals.
Suspense
Sean Connery 007 Collection 2 Amazon.com
Blaine: At the time of this writing (early June 4), there is no box art or description. This strikes me as odd.
War
The Bridge on the River Kwai Amazon.com
Western
Hopalong Cassidy: The Complete Series Amazon.com
The Outlaw Josey Wales Amazon.com
Rawhide: Season Four Volume One Amazon.com
True Grit (2010) Amazon.com Amazon.com

Finally, the picks of the week. Blaine says, “the Superman anthology is the only one I’ve seen that I can recommend. However, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights is a must-see in my book, there’s a lot of classic Marx Brothers product available, and I’m definitely curious about The Phantom Empire, Breaking Bad and Burn Notice.” Alex says, “Burn Notice is already in my Netflix Queue and as I watched a substantial chunk of this season on Hulu, I’m making this my pick. Tsubasa‘s in the queue and I’ll be adding True Grit later.”

  1. Burn Notice is a fantastic show and should be watched by all!

Also if you’ve not seen at least Duck Soup, you should.

  2. ‘The Man Who Would Be King’ is Sean Connery and Michael Caine at their finest! I missed this one on the lists, and I bought season three of ‘Breaking Bad’ to use up a $10 cert at Best Buy. Truly a show that draws you in.
HBO’s ‘Rome’ was a fantastic show, and I was really bummed when they shut it down. Only Starz’ ‘Spartacus’ series matches it. I would highly recommend ‘Rome’ if you haven’t seen it.

    • Rome was the series that turned me on to the pay channels and showed me what kind of mature content can be shown on TV without the FCC interfering. Spartacus was Rome on steroids and I can’t wait for the next season, too bad it will be a different actor for Spartacus.

I also liked The Tudors for the most part, especially Peter O’toole’s portrayal of the Pope.

I missed True Grit in theaters, need to watch it.

  3. I found Rome interesting, but overrated. If it hadn’t been cancelled, I would have stopped watching.

The early Marx Brothers are well worth a view, Bridge On the River Kwai should be seen at least once, and I’m looking forward to finally seeing the recent adaptation of True Grit.

Frankenstein Junior and The Impossibles? That brings back memories.

  4. Dan Zukovic’s “THE LAST BIG THING”, called the “best unknown American film of the 1990’s” in the film book “Defining Moments in Movies” (Editor: Chris Fujiwara), was finally released on DVD by Vanguard Cinema. (www.vanguardcinema.com/thelastbigthing/thelastbigthing) Featuring an important early role by 2011 Best Supporting Actor Oscar Nominee Mark Ruffalo (“Shutter Island”, “Zodiac”, “The Kids Are Alright”), “THE LAST BIG THING” had a US theatrical release in 1998, and gained a cult following over several years of screenings on the Showtime Networks.

“A distinctly brilliant and original work.” Kevin Thomas – Los Angeles Times
“A satire whose best moments echo the tone of a Nathanial West novel…Nasty Fun!”
Stephen Holden – New York Times
“One of the cleverest recent satires on contemporary Los Angeles…a very funny sleeper!” Michael Wilmington – Chicago Tribune
“One of the few truly original low budget comedies of recent years.” John Hartl – Seattle Times
“‘The Last Big Thing’ is freakin’ hilarious! The most important and overlooked
indie film of the 1990’s. ” Chris Gore – Film Threat

    • In that case, it would have been worth mentioning in the appropriate week, which was almost a year ago. (June 29, 2010.) Do you have any less spammy suggestions for this week’s releases?

        • Kinda my point actually. If we get a response, it’s a human being who may or may not learn to play by an appropriate set of rules. Had I gotten this via e-mail before writing the appropriate column, I’d have included the title on the list. Instead, if this account gets used to spam us again with no indication that this comment was read, it’ll just get banned with a private e-mail sent to the account holder to explain why.
