DVD News – Babylon 5 and Smallville

TV Shows on DVD has the skinny; Warner Bros. is speeding up production on the Babylon 5 DVD sets, and will include more extras in each season. Also, they’ll be putting out the first season of Smallville on March 18. I really need a paying job again; between these, the next season or two of Buffy, the first season or two of Angel, the continuing X-Files sets, and the release of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, 2003 will be an expensive year. That’s not counting the releases of Daredevil, X-Men 2, Hulk, LOTR: The Two Towers, Matrix 2, and possibly Matrix 3 either.

  1. WB dvds
Unfortunatly, Warner DVDs tend to come in cheap cardboard
boxes, with minimal features (oh wow! interactive menus you
say?), wich really annoys me because I fully intend on buying the
    damn Smallville set…

  2. Too much free time?

And how many of these are you actually going to watch? Even you love the show, how many times are you really going to rewatch it? Take Buffy for instance. I know that I’ll probably only watch half the actual episodes even one time (the rest I’ve seen too many times on FX), and the commentary/extras are often a bit thin in these sets. So why should I pay $60+ for another box to sit on my DVD shelf?

Granted, I plan to collect the B5 series just on principle, but I doubt I’ll watch it much. Even this great show has lost its replay value over time. Am I the only one who feels this way?

I think that most people are buying them so that they can watch them ten to twenty years from now when the networks will have forgotten that these shows even existed.

I am planning on getting all of B5 on dvd, but I probably won’t be watching very many of them right away. I just want to be able to watch B5 whenever I want.

I have several dvds of movies that I have only watched once. They are there for me to watch again in the future. Hopefully the dvd format will be viewable in ten to twenty years. :-)

I’ve watched my first season Buffy set through four times, and the second season once. (Most of my free time is over the summer.) Angel I’d watch just as often (especially since I missed it the first time around, as I did with the first four seasons of Buffy.) X-Files I’ll watch at least once through, and then back for specific episodes. ST:DS9 won’t be purchased if it’s at the same price as TNG. Smallville is something I’d watch through once and then spot check. I wasn’t reviewing it that season, so I’d do a mass review for the season as a whole here, too.

  3. Expensive? Cheaper than cable!
Yes, collecting TV series on DVD is expensive, and especially so now because the studios are playing catch-up. In a few years, you’ll be able to buy the previous year’s full season boxed set DVD for Christmas. They did it with “24,” and it’s just a matter of time before it becomes standard–there’s too much profit potential for them not to do so.

When that day comes, it may be cheaper to cancel cable and put the money into buying the shows you really care about. (Especially since people will give me DVDs as a gift, but won’t pay my cable bill as a present.)

I First Thought, “He’s Right, $60 For Buffy For A Season, And $30 A Month for Cable, For 9 Months (If I Skip Summer), That’s Like, 4.5 Seasons!”

Then I Realised, I Also Watch Angel (Another $60), And Firefly ($60?), And Smallville ($60), And John Doe ($60), SG-1, Farscape….

And That’s Already Too Expensive. Plus, There’s The Catch That You Have To Wait Till The End Of The Season. I Currently Have ‘Buffy Nights’ Where I Invite All My Other Buffy Addicted, Err… Buffy Fan friends Over, Make Dinner, And hang out While We Watch The Show.

BTW: If Anyones In Pittsburgh And Wants To Join Us Once The Season Starts Up again…

If you happen to live outside the civilized world like me this might be your only option. Here in Sweden (with cable!) Buffy is still in season 2 (they might have started airing season 3 now), Angel has never aired, SG-1 is in Season 1, Season 5 of B5 was never aired for some weird reason, Farscape S1 and S2 aired then it disappeared etc, etc, the list is endless..

Yes, it’s expensive as hell… but there’s not much to do about it. Gotta get the fix!

  4. TV SHows on DVD
I’ve figured out that I have about 1440 hours of television shows I need to watch now thanks to the TNG Box Sets, the TOS stuff, Andromeda, Farscape, and others.

I think I’m going to sit out the Smallville one. I like the show, I just don’t like it that much. And now with Andromeda tanking so much I’m thinking of putting the TV Shows up on half.com that I bought when it was a good show :(

      I’m sorry…when was Andromeda a good show?
      : )

      I can’t get through one episode…
