NPR is doing a semi-formal poll to determine the top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy novels. After much feedback from listeners, and having an expert panel narrow it down further, they’ve narrowed down the list to a few hundred. Now it’s up to us. They want readers to vote here, with ten titles per voter. On the 12th (eight days away) they will tabulate their votes and announce their top 100 titles.
So, go forth and vote!
I’m sure others will chime in with their “Why is X on the list instead of Z?!”, but I can’t help but notice the incongruity of including “Ender’s Game” and not “Speaker for the Dead”, given that even the author admits that “Ender’s Game” was mainly written to provide enough context for him to write “Speaker for the Dead”.
I do find it a little odd that some series are listed as series (like the Foundation trilogy and the Elric Saga), while others, like the Ender books, are listed as individual books.

Considering the original list was done as a bunch of listener submissions, it’s entirely possible that Scientologists stuffed the ballot box.
I had a similar reaction to seeing Steel Beach on that list. That book was horrible.

Interesting that almost every Neal Stephenson book was on that list.
Out of that entire list, the only book I think I would be disappointed not to see in the top 10 though is The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Such lists are often extremely subjective and rarely will people agree, though the superiority of HHGG is undeniable by anyone. :-)
