This week’s DVD choices are a little slim, but there’s some quality stuff here.
First, the genre releases:
- Black Hole: Not the Disney movie, but a recent Kristy Swanson movie. Its original release was June 10, 2006, and it’ll be on DVD less than two months later. That alone piques my interest, though I don’t expect it to be very good.
- Broken Saints – Animated Comic Epic: A DVD adaptation of a comic series I haven’t read.
- Cromartie High School: The complete series.
- Dracula, Prisoner of Frankenstein
- Excel Saga – Complete Collection
- Secret of Nimh: One of several MGM rereleases coming out this week under the “Best Seller” banner.
- The Shaggy Dog: The Tim Allen remake
- Spaceballs: MGM rerelease
- Star Trek Fan Collective – Klingon
- V for Vendetta: This link is to the widescreen two disk special edition.
Now, the non-genre
releases:
- Benny and Joon: Yet another MGM rerelease.
- Blue Collar TV – Complete Second Season
- Cheech Marin and Friends
- The Comeback – The Complete Only Season: Given the premise of the show, I find its failure mildly amusing.
- Curb Your Enthusiasm – Complete Fifth Season
- Dallas Season Five: I don’t know if this was the dream season or not.
- Elvis: ’68 Comeback
- Family Guy: Freakin’ Sweet Collection
- A Fish Called Wanda (Deluxe Edition)
- Good Times – Complete Sixth Season
- The Graduate: MGM rerelease.
- Hazel – Complete First Season
- The Magnificent Seven: MRM rerelease
- Mr. Moto Collection, Vol. 1: Four Mr. Moto movies starring Peter Lorre.
- Olivier’s Shakespeare: The Laurence Olivier films.
- Quigley Down Under: MGM rerelease
- Richard Pryor – Live in Concert
- Thelma and Louise: MGM rerelease
- This is Spinal Tap: Possibly the best of the MGM rereleases this week.
- Yours, Mine and Ours: MGM rereleases the original, with Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda
Finally, the pick of the week. I’ve got to go with V for Vendetta as the best of this lot.
Black Hole
Okay, I’ll admit it now. I’m a grammar/spelling Nazi. The correct word is pique, as in "piques my interest."
And I have to say that I fell in love with Kristy Swanson when she played the original Buffy. Any movie with her in it is a good one.
Re: Black Hole
Me too. Corrected.
Re: Black Hole
This was a Sci-Fi Saturday movie a couple of steps above Mansquito with the same amount of scientific accuracy.
A few comments
Secret of NIMH is a Sullivan/Bluth movie, the same folks who did All Dogs Go To Heaven etc.
I just bought Spinal Tap on tape a month-or-so ago, guess I’ll have to get an "upgrade" ;-)

The Prisoner
I tried to like The Prisoner but it was really all over the place. I saw maybe 6 episodes before I gave up on it. It seemed like a case of having a very cool setting and concept but the writers not knowing where the hell to take it.
Re: The Prisoner
And I posted this in the wrong week. Whoops!
Re: The Prisoner
That’s mostly true – Patrick McGoohan envisioned (and wrote) it to have only 7 episodes. They made him write 10 more. There are lists floating around saying which were his original ones, and what order to watch them in.
Worth it for the last episode.
Re: The Prisoner
oh, come on! Just tell me!
(I too tried to get into the prisoner, and never could)
