Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “As far as The Wizard of Oz goes, I’d have to see reviews on how the transfer is before I give this release a recommendation – if it’s overly cleaned up I might honestly need to give it a miss. Otherwise, there are a lot of good digital releases this week, but on the physical side of things, I’m going with Nana on the anime side, and Ncuti Gatwa’s second season of Doctor Who otherwise.” Blaine says, “it also comes down to The Wizard of Oz or Doctor Who this week.”

  1. I might have mentioned but Spaceballs is probably the movie I’ve seen the most times. Back in the day I had it on VHS and all my friends (and their friends, and their friends) wanted to see it and I probably watched it with all of them. There was basically a summer break where I watched it daily — sometimes several times. And I still love it.

The Golden Child is a pretty underappreciated movie. It’s very much Of Its Time, but if you can put up with that, it’s a fun Eddie Murphy movie. Oh with Charles Dance, too.

  2. The Big Short is an excellent movie that breaks down the 2008 housing crisis in an entertaining way with horrifying details of incompetence, greed, and corruption.

Event Horizon is one of my favorite horror films. It’s disturbing and doesn’t lean on the “characters have to be dumb to make the plot go” trope.
