Weekly Digital Disc Picks – September 20, 2011

There are a few more good titles this week, though nothing that quite competes with other recent door crashers.

Title Available Formats
Action
The Sword with No Name
A historical martial arts film from Korea.
Tajomaru: Avenging Blade
A new samurai film.
Anime
Amagami SS – Collection 1
Adaptation of a dating sim.
D.N.Angel – The Complete Series
Alex: Romantic comedy series with an interesting concept – when the main character is near the girl he’s in love with, he transforms into a person with a different personality (that of a mysterious thief – Phantom Dark) and different appearance. The girl he’s in love with is in love with the thief, but not him.
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
This is the film adapting the Haruhi novel of the same name.
Lady Death
Anime adapting the American comic book of the same title.
Vampire Knight Guilty – The Complete Series
Art House
La Beau Serge (Criterion Collection)
Les Cousins (Criterion Collection)
Classics (Traditional)
Landmarks of Early Soviet Film
Blaine: I haven’t heard of most of these titles, but I’ve heard of the directors, which include Sergei Eisenstein and Dziga Vertov.
Sophia Loren: Award Collection
Includes Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, Marriage Italian Style, Sunflower, Vittorio D and Boccaccio ’70

Body of Proof: Complete First Season
Blaine: Stars Dana Delany and Jeri Ryan. I’m sure that “of proof” is exactly the type of body people are tuning in to see.
Castle: Complete Third Season
Individual episode digital purchase links are available through this link.
Hawaii 5-0 (2010): The Complete First Season
Hawaii 5-0 (1968): Season 11
Law and Order: Los Angeles – Complete Series
McMillan and Wife: Season Six
The Mentalist: Season Three
Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer: The Complete Series
Blaine: Note that this is the original, 78 episode series starring Darren McGavin.
The River Murders
Romance
Breakfast at Tiffany’s (50th Anniversary Edition)
Science Fiction
Area 51
Sports
TNA Wrestling – Destination X
Featuring the matches with Christopher Daniels, Low Ki, and a rematch between Rob Van Dam and Jerry Lynn.
Superhero
Captain America (1990)
Blaine: Note that this is not the movie that came out this year. This is the one where someone decided that putting rubber ears on Cap’s cowl would look better than cutting out holes for his real ears to come out. This is remarkably terrible.
Suspense
Set Up

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “I’m going to make an exception and pick The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya as my pick of the week, even though I haven’t seen it yet. Castle Season 3 is a close second – though, in that case, while I haven’t seen Season 3, I have seen seasons 1 & 2 and enjoyed them immensely.” Blaine says, “I did watch the third season of Castle, and can recommend that without hesitation. Season four premieres on September 19.”

One reply

  1. Another +1 for Castle here. It’s the only thing I have my eye on, and after caving in and getting the SW Blu-Ray set yesterday I’ll need to keep an eye on my DVD/Blu-Ray budget.
