Greatest Science Fiction Film Tournament Week 9: Round 1

Our ninth round of voting is here. As you probably know, the 24 week first round is designed to winnow 384 options down to 128 contenders for tournament style eliminations. We are days away from having clear eliminations from the tournament. Once we reach that stage, should we announce those eliminations here, or keep those results quiet until round two begins in week 25?

  1. Accouncing the knock-outs each week with the annoucement next round might inspire some discussion and possibly a chance of a few howls of protest as people’s guilty pleasures get thrown out. I’d say annoucement them as the tournament progresses, with a recap of the results at the end, but only to the extent of “these are the 128 that made it, these are the 256 that didn’t” to avoid possible tainting of subsequent voting.

Apart from the ones that got unanimous “Below average” votes, of course. Those need to be named and mercilessly made fun of! :)

    • Okay, here’s what we’ll do. I’m about to go on vacation, so this will all take effect when I get back.

To this point, all weeks are still open for voting, and some people have been taking advantage of that by voting in 4-6 weeks at a time. As of the week of January 16, voting will close on each week when the following week opens. (I’ll give people time to catch up after the holidays in case voting is inconvenient.) That will be the week eliminations will be announced in alphabetical order. In week 24, there will be an additional vote opened up to address Chad’s justified concerns about voting on movies that are not out on home video. This vote will include Frankenweenie (2012), Dredd 3D (2012) and other recent releases that were not out on home video when their weeks came up.

Once that week closes, the top 128 will be compiled and the bottom 256 will be compiled. Both will be announced in alphabetical order.

  2. Addendum: when the entire tournament is over and the winner declared, I’ll post all results for all films in all weeks. This means the number of votes received, average scores, Bayesian averages, rankings, etc.
