Too dramatic
OK, I can tell already it’s way over-dramatic. The original was good because it was subtle. Grr.
Review
Eye of the beholder was decent. However, it has to try to live up to the original. There was a remake of the “Game Of Pool” episode for on of the other twilight zone revivals, that had a different ending. That different ending made it worthy enough to stand on its own. I thought the previews for this episode mentioned a “new twist ending”. Sadly there was none. Now, unless my memory fails me, in the original, there wasn’t this huge emphasis on exiling people that dare to be different or voice their dissent. In this version, they really beat you over the head with it. Does it make a better episode? Eh, not really, it makes it slightly worse actually. I also didn’t think the way they hid all the faces worked as well as it did in the original. Still, I suppose its a worthy remake of the story.
Developing was one of the “person gets magic item” episodes. These usually go either way. For the first 25 minutes of this story, it was boring and poorly executed. Well it wasn’t executed in a way that keeps your interest. So.. was the twist worth it? Too sappy for my tastes and not worth the 25 minute build up ;)… drip drip drip..
Re: Review
Actually the original episode did make fairly heavy
weather
of the conformity issue – like it wasn’t the whole point of the
episode then it was at least a fairly important secondary payload.
So I think it must just be the way you remembered it. No surprise
really, I think many people kind of missed this.
Here’s the
script
of the original episode.
I’m disappointed…
I’m a huge fan of anthologies, but I haven’t found a single new Twilight Zone that I have really enjoyed.
These episodes this week were nothing special, no new story.
But I still have my TiVo record the Twilight Zone for the (slim) hope of seeing a refeshing story.
Any ideas if The Outer Limits will be making any new shows? Those were much better IMHO.
