Weekly New Releases – August 14, 2018

Sorry this is late: Alex and I were both swamped last weekend. The major doorcrasher, Avengers: Infinity War, wasn’t available for preorder anyway.

Comments Blaine: Arguably Eddie Murphy’s worst movie. It was completed and shelved for 14 months before they found a month with so little competition that they thought they had a shot of making back the budget. Spoiler: they didn’t. The estimated budget is $100 million, and the worldwide gross was just barely over $7 million. Currently #81 in the IMDB bottom 100 list, it took home the Razzie award for “worst comedy of our first 25 years.” I have to be honest, I kind of want to see it after all of that.

Comments Blaine: Part of me has long been irked by the claim that Jules Verne created science fiction, for two reasons. One, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s Frankenstein predates his work by a LOT. Two, he doesn’t extrapolate science, he applies existing and verified technology in new ways. I maintain that he created a genre better titled “engineering fiction” than “science fiction”.

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “Ergo Proxy has been on my to-watch list for a while, and since Amazon and Disney are having a snit, I’d recommend checking this out in the mean time.” Blaine says, “pick up Avengers: Infinity War from the alternative retailer of your choice.”

  1. Sure, Infinity War wasn’t available for pre-order, but what about those who missed on first grab at The Adventures of Pluto Nash? What about those poor sods?!??!?

  2. I have to say watching Infinity War again did not make the ending any easier.

I’m still impressed they were able to pull that movie off at all.
