Comic Television Discussion – Week beginning 27 January 2019

This week, Supergirl makes a big deal to introduce the world’s first transgender superhero on television, Arrow keeps recreating Suicide Squad, Flash’s daughter’s secrets get revealed, Black Lightning doesn’t give us a synopsis, and The Gifted takes the week off.  Riverdale continues to feel purely like a soap opera.  What are you watching, anything keeping your interest?

Supergirl – S04E11 – Blood Memory – Kara joins Nia on a trip to Nia’s hometown to visit her family during the town’s annual Harvest Festival. While home, Nia’s mother encourages her daughter to embrace her destiny. Meanwhile, Alex deals with a street drug that is turning people violent and giving them temporary superpowers.

Arrow – S07E11 – Past Sins – The past comes back to haunt both Oliver and Laurel. Curtis is upset when he discovers that Diggle and Lyla have restarted The Ghost Initiative with Diaz, China White, Kane Wolfman and Carrie Cutter.

Black Lightning – S02E11 – The Book of Secrets: Chapter One: Prodigal Son – (No synopsis)

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow – S04E09 – Lucha de Apuestas – (Returns 1 April 2019, allegedly)

The Flash – S05E12 – Memorabilia – When Sherloque wants to use a memory machine on Barry and Nora to help gain access to Grace’s memories, Nora panics, fearing her parents will find out the secrets she’s been keeping from them. Nora secretly decides to use the machine on her own, which ends in disaster after she gets trapped inside Grace’s mind. Barry and Iris go in after their daughter and Iris is brokenhearted by what she finds. Meanwhile, Ralph tricks Cisco into going out for a night out on the town.

The Gifted – S02E14 – calaMity – When one of the Inner Circle goes missing, Reeva intensifies security in their compound, but realizes that her plans may have already been exposed. Furious and paranoid, Reeva resorts to violence. Caitlin and Reed consider using the serum to restrict Lauren’s use of her powers, hoping it will help her as she wrestles with nightmares about the Inner Circle and her ancestors. And it’s the battle of two extreme ideologies when the Morlocks and the Purifiers come face-to-face in battle. (Returns February 5th, 2019)

Riverdale – S03E11 – Chapter Forty-Six: The Red Dahlia – After one of their own becomes the target of an unseen assailant, the gang works together to get to the bottom of Riverdale’s latest mystery. Meanwhile, Betty works with a surprising ally to piece together clues about a series of deaths in the town. Elsewhere, a spiraling Archie sets out on a new path, while Jughead comes face to face with Ms. Mulwray, Hiram’s alleged mistress.

The Orville – S02E06 – A Happy Refrain – The Orville crew is surprised when Claire’s personal life takes an unexpected turn. Gordon makes an unusual grooming suggestion to Bortus.

The whole transgender thing is really a non-issue, but when I tried to search the character to see anything about her in the comics, all I could find was news article and press release proclaiming “the world’s first transgender superhero on television” to the point that it feels like such fake marketing that it annoyed me. Stunt-casting is the wrong word, but stunt-representation might fit?

    And why does she get a spandex costume at the end? They make the character a superhero just because they say she was, she doesn’t actually superhero at all.

  2. Riverdale keeps doing these genre stye shows, such as this one where Jughead is sam spade. This was the sort of thing Archie’s comics used to do, just with a lot less, let’s call it drama.

    Taken in single bites, I think I might actually be enjoying it.
