Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “Godzilla – King of the Monsters is definitely my pick of the week. It manages to pull off a level of camp comperable to the Heisei and Millenium-era Godzilla films (but before Final Wars), which has more appeal to me than the Showa Godzilla films.” Blaine says, “I would recommend V: The Original Miniseries of the titles I’ve seen.”
Banana Splits Movie
I remember watching that as a kid, I loved that, and I even have the Liz Phair song and I love it. Let me go see what this movie is…
….😳.
Is this Liz Phair before or after she turned into Britney Spears?
I am guessing before? I didn’t know that happened to her, and now I am worried about ever hearing any new stuff.
She recorded the cover early in her career (1995), for the compilation/tribute album Saturday Morning Cartoons’ Greatest Hits, which features a number of artists covering songs from 60s and 70s cartoons. The Banana Splits theme, which she does with Material Issue, actually opens the album and is one of its highlights. I’m not surprised you have it, too!
I knew there was quite a gap between 90s LIz and her more recent recordings, and I’m not too familiar with it, but “turned into Britney Spears?” Harsh, dude.
We’ll always have Guyville.
See I first heard of Liz Phair back in the day when I’d still go to shops and buy CDs that looked interesting or whatever. So I got Exile in Guyville and her then-current album (the self-titled Liz Phair).
Exile in Guyville is pretty good. But in her latest (at the time), her voice is like 3 octaves higher, and the songs are pop-y as hell. There were still explicit lyrics but they were so contrived. Like “Look at me!!! I’m saying dirty words!!!!!!!” contrived.
Exile in Guyville is
pretty good. outstanding.(switches from nerdy to hipster voice)
I was driving into Toronto in ’93 with the radio on the alt-station when I heard the tenth track from that album and had a “woah!” reaction, like, I have to find out who this is and get that album. Of course, it went on to make everyone’s “Best of the Year” list and land in the Rolling Stones’ 500 best albums of all time… Then she kind of faltered on the next couple albums and stopped recording for awhile. Liz Phair came out ten years after Exile. I should probably listen to her more recent work, because she’s had some.
Flesh Gordon? I followed the link because I was shocked B42 was linking to a porn movie, but apparently it’s more of a spoof than a porn, just a very porny spoof.
That actually sounds more entertaining to me, now, and I might try to watch it someday.
I remember the Banana Splits from my early childhood. This movie is a horror film set against the backdrop of a revived version of the show, because…. No idea.
I’ve seen and reviewed FG. It’s 70s, with the level of acting you’d expect. What makes it memorable is that the filmmakers seemed far more interested in making an SF spoof than they were in making a softcore in the other genre of this movie. Humor will make you long for the brilliant wit of the middle school locker room. But a 70s cult classic to be sure
“Flesh Gordon? That must be a typo.”
Narrator: It wasn’t.
“Dr. Hans Jerkoff.”
I never saw the sequel– it actually had a sequel– but I don’t imagine the rapier-like wit got any sharper.
Now now. If you want rapier-like wit, you have to watch Zorro: the Gay Blade.
For those of you confused about the Banana Splits movie (and there’s every reason to be so very confused), the rationale is this: The studio had the rights to Five Nights at Freddy’s, wrote a script and was ready to go when they lost the rights. They then put a different title on it, slapped in different “skins” for the characters and went crazy.
This usually happens in reverse (see Die Hards 4 and 5, Starship Troopers). But there you have it. Watch at your own peril.
Also Die Hard 3, written as Lethal Weapon 4.
