Weekly New Releases – April 23, 2024

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “My 4K pick of the week is for The Departed – it and I Am Cuba are the more notable of the UHD releases this week. Otherwise my pick is Black Mask – I appreciate that this release has both the original and US versions of the film.” Blaine says, “of the titles I’ve seen, Monk is my pick. I’m holding off on watching The Departed until it comes up for the 99 Years, 100 Films podcast.”

  1. Hardware Wars. Man, I remember watching that on a crappy VHS tape during sleepovers back in the early 1980s. I may have to get that to show my son (who loves retro stuff).

I have a soft spot for Steel Magnolias. It was the first play I ever worked on. The film version is decently close to the stage play, but the play takes place entirely in Trudy’s shop and there are only the six main women in the cast.
