Weekly New Releases – December 3, 2019

Abominable

Comments Available on physical media December 17. Banned in Vietnam due to a particular map inserted by the Chinese animation studio, which identifies a certain portion of the ocean as belonging to China while International Courts have declared they rightfully belong to Vietnam. That hasn’t stopped China from not only fishing those waters anyway, but apparently attacking and killing Vietnamese people who are fishing in those waters, as well.

Comments “A bit of a spin of an Isekai anime series, with the premise that after a player of a VRMMORPG was killed playing the game, the game was recalled – but several years later after a fixed version of the game is released, a friend of that dead player finds the character of the dead player in the game world, with their personality and memories intact.

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “I whole-heartedly recommend this new release of Big Trouble in Little China in whatever your preferred version is – especially considering the additional interviews on this release.” Blaine says, “it’s the Spider-Man collection that catches my eye.”

  1. She-Ra, this new series, is actually titled “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.” Subtle distinction, but does change the meaning.

As for is it worth watching it: I am an adult male (like you, Blaine.) I was a big fan of He-Man, and thus She-Ra, when I was younger. This is not that, at all. This is much more like your action show aimed at girls, and probably has more in common with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic than it does the original She-Ra.

I have two younger daughters (11 and 7), and after the first episode it was clear this was not made for me, but my girls loved it, and I enjoyed it enough to watch it all with them.

    • > I am an adult male (like you, Blaine.)

      > This […] probably has more in common with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

Yeah, no adult males watch that.

And now I pray to the formatting gods before hitting “post”. Praise be to Formatucolis, the ancient Roman god of markup!

  2. They… they made another Rambo movie?… and for some reason I’m still surprised by crap like this?…

I’m going to wait for Space Princess to show up on Best of the Worst.

  3. I’m all in for Sesame Street as it defined my TV watching at young age. The wife and I will be watching that. I’m also a sucker for horror-comedy, so Ready or Not is on the to-watch list as well.

    • I wonder if that gets any accidental audience from the now-grown fans of the 1990s tween/teen series of the same name?

(If you don’t know it, it was a well-made, low-budget Canadian series that was picked up in the U.S. and Britain. One of its stars went on to play “Trance Gemini.” in Andromeda).
