Comments Anime series based on a series of mecha light novels, about a future where various countries have developed giant robots called “Infinite Stratos” (IS) – normally capable of being operated only by women. When a teenage boy, Ichika Orimura, is found who possesses the innate ability to operate a prototype IS Suit (making him the first and only boy who is able to do so), he is roped into attending a nominally girls-only school for training IS pilots. A combination of action and rom/com hijinx ensue.

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “On the 4K release side, I’m going to go with either Escape from New York or The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, depending on your taste in westerns. Otherwise I’m going to pick up Belle (the Fate movie is probably going to have a physical release on RightStuf through Aniplex USA, which means I’ll need to save up some scratch for that).” Blaine says, “of the titles I’ve seen, the 1941 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the best. Licorice Pizza was nominated for Best Picture, so I intend to check that out at some point.”

One reply

  1. I’m a huge fan of American Experience and recently watched “Flood in the Desert.” It’s good, if you like the sort of thing AM does. The 1941 Jekyll/Hyde is definitely worth seeing, as is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. In both cases, make the appropriate adjustments for era and genre. I’ll keep an eye open for the Vonnegut doc.

I saw Top Secret many years ago. I recall maybe two gags that I laughed at, and little else about the film, so I don’t know if it’s better or worst than I remember. The people who brought you Airplane! and Naked Gun come up with a less-successful spoof that crosses spy thrillers with Elvis movies.

Never saw Licorice Pizza. Perhaps I will. From most accounts it sounds as though the controversy was blown out of proportion to anything that happens or is even suggested in the movie.
